Yesterday, the floral carpet rolled out at the entrance of New York’s Museum of Modern Art welcomed the 450 guests of the Met Gala, all dressed to the nines and attempting to follow this year’s dress code: “Tailored for you” (in French: “fait sur mesure pour vous”), in line with the Costume Institute’s spring 2025 exhibition “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style“, honoring the figure and aesthetic of the “Black dandy.” Unlike previous years and our predictions, very few French celebrities were in attendance, but made-in-France fashion was undoubtedly present. Here’s a recap of all the outfits created by the most prestigious French Maisons that lit up the Met Gala red carpet last night.
Louis Vuitton
The French Maison most represented on the red carpet was without a doubt Louis Vuitton, which is neither surprising nor coincidental given the presence of the brand’s menswear creative director Pharrell Williams among the evening’s co-chairs. Pharrell himself was, of course, dressed head-to-toe in Vuitton, wearing a light jacket embroidered with pearls, adorned with a tie, and black flared trousers. He also had the honor of dressing Anna Wintour, the evening’s organizer, in a custom look featuring a long white gown with floral embroidery, a large blue brooch adorned with jewels, and a powder-blue coat draped neatly over her shoulders. In a very different style, we also spotted the Louis Vuitton logo on the tights of K-pop singer Lisa, who wore an all-black outfit composed of a bodysuit hidden under an elegant blazer, and on Sabrina Carpenter, who also went for a “no pants” look featuring a brown bodysuit and matching tailored blazer, finished with an endless train and platform shoes to make her appear less short but just as sweet. But the two Vuitton looks that most caught our eye were those of Zendaya and Doechii, the former in an elegant white suit finished with a hat covering half her face, and the latter in a checkered bermuda paired with a branded tailcoat, decorated with a neck scarf matching her knee-high socks. On the men’s side, Vuitton appeared on Jeremy Allen White and Callum Turner, both in simple, effective black suits, and on rappers Future and Pusha T, wearing a grey tartan set and a burgundy suit respectively, the latter adorned with a cascade of glitter delicately draped over the shoulders.
Chanel
In second place we find the Maison Chanel. As we predicted, singer Angèle was indeed present, dressed head-to-toe in Chanel with a look far edgier than her first Met appearance in 2023. Dressed in a lilac gown paired with a leather jacket and matching belts worn at the waist and around the neck, she coordinated perfectly with Chanel’s new fragrance Chance, of which she is the ambassador. She wasn’t the only Chanel ambassador present and shining bright. Her fellow singer Dua Lipa, with whom she performed Fever in 2020 and who is now the new face of the Maison’s leather goods line, posed in an all-black ensemble made of tulle and feathers with a 1920s flair. The other new face for Chanel bags, Jennie, wore a long off-shoulder dress adorned with the iconic Camellia and a pearl necklace, accessorized with a black and white hat. But the Maison didn’t stick to just black—Lupita Nyong’o, Chanel’s global brand ambassador since last October, proudly represented it in a suit/shirt/trousers set in a vibrant light blue, embellished with a long veil flowing from the shoulders.
Jacquemus
More discreet and less instantly recognizable, Jacquemus was also in attendance with custom looks for Tyla and Central Cee. While the Water singer set the bar high last year with her sand gown by Olivier Rousteing, she did not disappoint this year either. The young artist paid tribute to icons Josephine Baker and André Leon Talley with a corseted poplin dress paired with an oversized men’s shirt delicately draped over her shoulders, both pieces “finely striped with glitter threads and transparent crystals, with a surreal touch in the raw and irregular embroidery details, adorned with delicate crystal-cut strands”, as described by designer Simon Porte Jacquemus in an Instagram post. But her counterpart Central Cee was not to be outdone, dressed in a black Japanese wool tuxedo featuring “a double-breasted jacket, well-cut trousers, and an immaculate white poplin shirt”, all accessorized with a polka-dot pocket square, an elegant pipe hanging from a leather strap around his neck, and a cane topped with a polished metal sphere.
Balmain
Among the few French celebrities on the red carpet was Olivier Rousteing, naturally dressed in Balmain, in an all-black suit adorned with a gold pocket square and an unusual bag: an old black and gold sewing machine. And he wasn’t alone: on his arm was the stunning Rosalia, wearing a white Balmain gown composed of a body-hugging molded bodice and a cascading white skirt. In a completely different style, Jenna Ortega also wore Balmain, clad entirely in metal with a bustier dress reminiscent of both a disco ball and Joan of Arc’s chainmail. While it’s unclear how she sat down, we now know two things: silver is her color, and Medieval Weird Core suits her perfectly.
But also Saint Laurent, Alaïa, Balenciaga, Courrèges, Dior, and Givenchy
Dressed by Anthony Vaccarello for Saint Laurent, we saw both Rosé and Hailey Bieber looking very (too?) understated, wearing two versions of black suits—pants with a cape and puffed sleeves for Rosé, and a mini dress for Hailey. Though Miley Cyrus is also known for her Saint Laurent red carpet looks, she wore Alaïa last night, in a long-sleeved black leather top split down the middle and a matching long skirt. Black was also brilliantly worn by a stunning Nicole Kidman, sporting an unexpected short haircut and a strapless Balenciaga gown, accessorized with two bow-adorned belts and matching gloves. Speaking of short cuts, one of the night’s most acclaimed looks was the custom Courrèges dress worn by Emma Chamberlain. Glasses on nose, gloved hand, and bare back, the young content creator revived the slightly forgotten office siren aesthetic with a gorgeous black dress subtly decorated with white pinstripes and an immense train. The Maison Dior was also present, dressing Monica Barbaro—star of the successful biopic Un Parfait Inconnu and Timothée Chalamet’s colleague, who ultimately did not grace us with his presence—in a modernized New Look outfit. Let’s conclude our recap with Givenchy, who dressed Wicked star Cynthia Erivo in a majestic black jacket with broad shoulders, embroidered with red, green, and silver jewels, paired with a mini short covered by a massive open-front tulle skirt.
