There are rumbles that smoking is back. As a casual observer to many of my peers and friends who have let their social, weekend, and cheeky vacation habits creep into their daily lives, I’d say the rumbles are right on the money. (I can’t personally vouch for this as I’ve never smoked a cigarette in my life—shocked?!) And on the heels of this most recent ’90s trend to slide back into the zeitgeist come some excellent accessories.
Bejeweled, gilded, and tassel-adorned lighters are popping up more and more. Even candle lovers (again, not me) appreciate a beautiful lighter, right? Why do I care? This time the lighters are, largely, pendant necklaces. As someone who doesn’t fall into a cigarette or candle pigeon hole, I can appreciate a good statement necklace when I see one (I also happen to love the schtick of this genre of them). Case and point, I wear my S.T. Dupont enamel lighter necklace as much as a conversation piece as an objet.

Wearable, functionable objects have been in and out of style for centuries. This is how eye glasses started, after all—the oldest of which likely being the monocle or opera glasses (I have it on good authority that Fred Leighton has an excellent vintage pair of opera glasses on a delicate diamond chain should someone be looking, but I digress). In more recent history, Elsa Perreti’s bottle necklace with removable stopper is still a classic for the brand. The Row’s comb necklace graced the runway a few seasons ago and spawned the creation of many more. Even the humble pen has had this accessory glow-up of sorts: Loro Piana and Montblanc being just two luxury brands that make beautiful, adaptable pens—and pendants—for your (or your bag’s) adornment.
