KUCHING (Sept 12): Malaysia is steadily positioning itself as a regional semiconductor hub, with Sarawak emerging as a key driver of the nation’s high-tech ambitions, said Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Speaking at the launch of X-FAB Sarawak’s RM3-billion expansion at Sama Jaya High Tech Park today, the Prime Minister said the investment reflects strong international confidence in the state’s leadership and governance.
“I greatly appreciate the confidence shown in our country, Malaysia, and especially in Sarawak, with a total of RM3 billion invested solely for this expansion.
“This is the result of trust, confidence, and the performance of the state government under Premier (Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri) Abang Johari (Tun Openg).
“It makes my job as Prime Minister much easier when there is a progressive state government like this,” he said when officiating at the event.
Anwar noted that while some states require the federal government to actively push agendas, fast-track approvals, and offer attractive incentives, Sarawak’s strong policy framework and stable leadership have made it a compelling destination for high-value investments.
“Investments are not just about numbers. It involves embedding automation and artificial intelligence (AI) for innovation and precision at every level,” he said, sharing his experience visiting semiconductor factories equipped with cutting-edge technologies.
Anwar emphasised that Malaysia’s semiconductor success cannot rely solely on producing engineers, as a sustained synergy between universities and industry is crucial to producing a workforce capable of meeting global standards.
“We do produce engineers, but it is not enough if there is no close collaboration with industry.
“Universities must adapt, not just with traditional academic approaches, but by leveraging the experience and expertise of the industry to produce a workforce that is truly prepared,” he said.
Anwar also noted that Malaysia is strategically placed to engage with leading economies across the United States, China, Europe, Latin America, and Africa.
He said upcoming summits and international economic conferences present an opportunity to showcase Malaysia’s potential and attract more high-value investments.
He added that Sarawak is no longer just a hub for energy and manufacturing, but increasingly a centre for selective, high-impact investment.
“We are being more focused on the type of investments we attract.
“Everywhere I go, people talk about the capacity, hydro and green hydrogen, and the enormous potential to become a hub supplying energy not only to Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, Sabah, the Philippines, and Indonesia.
“This strategy must be fully supported and endorsed at both the state and national levels, aligned with the Asean framework,” he added.
