Anthropic has announced that new versions of its Claude Gov large language models are ready for adoption at the government level, specifically for national security mission workloads.
In a Thursday blog post, Anthropic unveiled its new Claude Gov models, which were developed based on feedback from government customers to address “real-world operational needs.” A person familiar with the product told Nextgov/FCW that the Claude Gov models are able to operate in classified environments within the top secret arenas.
“What makes Claude Gov models special is that they were custom-built for our national security customers,” Thiyagu Ramasamy, head of Public Sector at Anthropic, said in a press release. “By understanding their operational needs and incorporating real-world feedback, we’ve created a set of safe, reliable, and capable models that can excel within the unique constraints and requirements of classified environments.”
Specific tasks Claude Gov is tailored to support include improved handling of classified materials, better understanding of documents and information specific to intelligence and defense contexts, enhanced ability to detect different languages and dialects and improved interpretation of cybersecurity data for analysis.
This effort follows Anthropic’s journey into the public sector, which Ramasamy was tapped to spearhead in early 2025. Government customers have been able to access Anthropic’s Claude 3 Sonnet and Claude 3 Haiku AI models through Amazon Web Services’ hosting capabilities.
Generative AI tools are becoming popular options for government clients as agency leadership is looking to leverage new technologies to improve efficiency and reduce bureaucratic backlogs.
