Hartlepool United: American Landon Smith completes takeover

Hartlepool United’s long-awaited sale has been completed, with American real estate developer Landon Smith buying the National League side.

The takeover was confirmed on 31 December, two years and nine months after the club was first put up for sale by Raj Singh.

In a statement confirming that Smith has acquired a full controlling stake “with immediate effect”, the deal was described as one that marks “a significant new chapter in the club’s history”.

Smith, a co-founder and principal partner of Minnesota-based real estate company Tailwind Group, says he comes in with plans to restore Hartlepool to the English Football League and invest in the club on and off the pitch while “enhancing financial sustainability”.

“Having looked at several National League and EFL clubs, it was clear to see the potential with Pools, including the benefit of the foundation work that has been put in under the current owner’s tenure,” Smith told the club website., external

“I’m looking forward to building on that, and I’m fully committed to investing in the club for what I hope will be a very exciting future.”

Chelsea: What was Enzo Maresca’s records as manager?

Maresca’s predecessor, Argentine Mauricio Pochettino, managed Chelsea between July 2023 and May 2024.

His win rate as Chelsea boss was 51%, emerging victorious from 26 matches of 51 in charge, but he left the club by mutual consent at the end of the 2023-24 season.

Former Chelsea player Frank Lampard had a second spell in charge as the club’s caretaker boss between April and June 2023. In that time, his side won one match and drew twice in 11 games. The win rate in his first spell was 47.4%.

Graham Potter led Chelsea between September 2022 and April 2023 – his side won 12 games out of 31, a win rate of 38%.

During Thomas Tuchel’s tenure between January 2021 and September 2022, Chelsea won 60 matches of 100 and lost only 16 games.

  • Enzo Maresca: Chelsea manager leaves with Blues fifth in Premier League

Enzo Maresca: Chelsea manager leaves with Blues fifth in Premier League

Maresca stunned even members of his own staff when – after beating Everton 2-0 for Chelsea‘s solitary Premier League win in December – he said “many people” had made it his “worst 48 hours” since joining the club.

Those comments came without any warning to club staff or senior management, who would have preferred any discussions to remain private.

But friction had been brewing in the months before that.

Maresca had hoped to raise his profile following the Blues’ successes through opportunities outside the club. He was planning to publish a book before being blocked, and spoke at Il Festival dello Sport – an event in Italy organised by La Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper – without the club’s permission.

He also made public that he disagreed with the club not signing a central defender after Levi Colwill injured his anterior cruciate ligament in pre-season. The club’s hierarchy explained that doing so could prompt academy prospect Josh Acheampong to request a transfer, which ultimately led Maresca to back down.

The former Leicester manager has also switched agents – from the Wasserman agency to Jorge Mendes – and has been talked of as a potential successor to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, which Maresca has dismissed.

In addition, he has increasingly avoided wearing club tracksuits – opting instead for his own clothing.

Following his last game with Chelsea – a 2-2 draw with Bournemouth on 30 December – assistant manager Willy Caballero said Maresca felt too unwell to do his post-match media duties, but it is understood his absence was more due to him considering his next steps.

It was noticeable that when Chelsea posted a 52-second video on social media on New Year’s Eve summarising their year, there was no trace of Maresca.

  • TSA To Introduce $45 Identity Verification Option For Travelers Without REAL ID Next Month

TSA To Introduce $45 Identity Verification Option For Travelers Without REAL ID Next Month

News Americas, WASHINGTON, D.C., Jan. 1, 2026: The Transportation Security Administration, (TSA), has announced a new fee-based identity verification option for airline passengers who arrive at airport security checkpoints without an acceptable form of identification, including a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license.

Beginning February 1, 2026, travelers without valid ID who still wish to fly will be able to pay a $45 fee to use TSA ConfirmID, a modernized alternative identity verification system designed to confirm a passenger’s identity prior to entering the security screening process.

The $45 payment will cover a 10-day travel window, allowing passengers to use the ConfirmID option for multiple flights during that period. TSA officials say the program is intended as a last-resort option and strongly encourage travelers to obtain a REAL ID or other acceptable identification in advance.

    How TSA ConfirmID Works

Under the new policy, passengers who do not present an acceptable form of ID at airport checkpoints will be referred to TSA ConfirmID during check-in. The identity verification process will vary by airport and may involve additional screening steps and delays.

TSA is working with private industry partners to offer online payment options ahead of travel, though travelers who arrive at airports without prepaying will still be able to access payment information near security checkpoints.

Officials caution that travelers using TSA ConfirmID should expect longer wait times, particularly during peak travel periods.

    Acceptable Forms of Identification

TSA continues to accept a wide range of identification documents, including:

    • REAL ID–compliant driver’s licenses or state IDs
    • U.S. passports and passport cards
    • Permanent resident cards
    • DHS Trusted Traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
    • U.S. Department of Defense IDs
    • Foreign government-issued passports
    • Employment Authorization Cards (I-766)
    • Enhanced Driver’s Licenses (EDL/EID)
    • Federally recognized tribal IDs

Temporary driver’s licenses are not accepted.

Currently, TSA reports that more than 94% of passengers already present REAL ID–compliant identification or other acceptable documents when flying domestically.

REAL ID Enforcement and Policy Context

The REAL ID Act was signed into law more than two decades ago but faced repeated implementation delays under previous administrations. According to TSA, full enforcement began on May 7, 2025, under the Trump administration and Department of Homeland Security leadership.

TSA officials say the ConfirmID fee ensures that the cost of additional identity verification is borne by the traveler, not taxpayers.

“Identity verification is essential to traveler safety,” said TSA Senior Official Adam Stahl. “Beginning February 1, travelers who do not present acceptable identification and still want to fly can pay a $45 fee and undergo the TSA ConfirmID process.”

    What Travelers Should Know

TSA urges travelers—particularly immigrants, dual nationals, and frequent travelers—to:

    • Confirm whether their current ID is REAL ID–compliant
    • Schedule DMV appointments as soon as possible if upgrades are needed
    • Carry alternative acceptable documents, such as passports or permanent resident cards
    • Plan for additional time at airports if relying on ConfirmID

More information about REAL ID and acceptable identification is available at TSA.gov/real-id or by contacting @AskTSA.

Dundee United v Dundee: Why are some games exempt from the 3pm TV blackout?

BBC Sport has been told that fixture congestion, combined with the sheer number of dates being used for matches over the festive period, mean some games fall outside the limited number of TV slots available, which is why Uefa relaxes the rules around broadcasting over Christmas and New Year.

Scottish Premiership fixture Livingston v Celtic was shown live at 15:00 on 27 December, despite more than half of the league’s fixtures kicking off at the same time – which would usually trigger the blackout rule.

That weekend was on Uefa’s list of exempt days, although the English Premier League did not exercise its right to broadcast games at that time.

The ban is also lifted for fixtures across the UK on 3 January, which will see the Dundee derby broadcast live as a result – but the Premier League has again not opted to allow its games to be shown.

There are also exemptions in place for international breaks and major cup fixtures, such as the FA Cup quarter-finals on 4 April – although the latter is not an exempt weekend in Scotland.

Early rounds of Scotland’s Premier Sports Cup have also been broadcast live on Saturday afternoons in the past due to the fact that they happen before the blocked hours weekends begin in late August.

  • January transfer window: Who could be on the move?

January transfer window: Who could be on the move?

BBC Sport Chelsea reporter Nizaar Kinsella:Chelsea‘s focus this window is expected to be more on outgoings than incomings. Most activity will centre on signing top young talent for the future or preparing for the summer transfer window.

“The club did briefly explore a move for Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo, underlining their willingness to change tack when a major opportunity arises.

“On the outgoing front, Raheem Sterling and Axel Disasi – part of the so-called ‘bomb squad’ – top the priority list and are available for sale or a domestic loan.

Chelsea have already filled all six overseas loan slots, meaning they can only loan players within English football unless they recall one of their loanees.”

Sami Mokbel: “AZ Alkmaar attacking midfielder Sven Mijnans is attracting interest from the Premier League.

West Ham are among the clubs to have monitored the 25-year-old, who also has suitors in Italy. He has 16 goal contributions (eight goals, eight assists) for the Dutch side this season.”

BBC Sport Liverpool reporter Aadam Patel: “Wataru Endo is currently injured but he has played just 43 minutes in the Premier League this season. With the World Cup coming up, the Japanese international could be on his way out.

“Federico Chiesa is a fan-favourite but Arne Slot has used the Italian winger sparingly so far. Like Endo, Chiesa may be after first-team football before the World Cup. Italy are yet to secure qualification but the 28-year-old last played for the Azzurri at Euro 2024.”

BBC Sport Manchester City reporter Shamoon Hafez: “Goalkeeper James Trafford may depart in January if Manchester City sanction a move. The 23-year-old is playing second fiddle to Gianluigi Donnarumma but needs to play regularly in a World Cup year. Club sources have told BBC Sport they have no interest in letting the ex-Burnley number one leave midway through the season.

“German Stefan Ortega is more likely to go as he is now effectively fourth choice goalkeeper, but it remains to be seen whether a deal can be agreed with any club.

“And what of forgotten man Kalvin Phillips? The English midfielder has made one substitute appearance this season in the Carabao Cup but is way down the pecking order at City, so a move in January would make sense for all parties.”
