En su libro “You can’t eat roses, Mary!”

Japan legend Kazuyoshi Miura, 58, signs new loan deal

Kazuyoshi Miura, who turns 59 in February and is the world’s oldest professional footballer, has signed a loan deal until June with Japanese third division side Fukushima United.

The move means Miura could play in the J. League – the top three divisions of Japanese football – for the first time in five years.

The former Japan striker, who started his career with Brazilian side Santos in 1986, failed to score in 69 minutes across seven appearances last season on loan at fourth-tier club Atletico Suzuka.

“My passion for football hasn’t changed, no matter how old I get,” he said as he prepares for a 41st season as a professional footballer.

“I’m very grateful to be given this opportunity. I promise I will play with everything I have to make a contribution. Let’s make history together!”

Known as ‘King Kazu’ in Japan, this will be Miura’s fourth loan since 2022 from 2 League side Yokohama FC.

Miura, who has also played club football in Italy, Croatia and Australia, signed for the club in 2005 but has not played a minute for them since 2020.

He scored 55 goals in 89 games in an international career that ended in 2000, two years after his notable omission from the squad for Japan’s first World Cup finals appearance.

Miura, who has talked of playing until he is 60, said he was ready to “take on a new challenge” after suffering relegation last season to Japan’s regional leagues.

Fukushima finished 10th in the 20-team third division last season.

  • West Ham to back Nuno Espirito Santo in January transfer window

West Ham to back Nuno Espirito Santo in January transfer window

Relegation-threatened West Ham are committed to backing manager Nuno Espirito Santo in the transfer market next month.

The former Wolves, Tottenham and Nottingham Forest boss was appointed as Graham Potter’s replacement on 25 September.

After starting with four games without a win, the Hammers then lost just one in six before their current run of three successive defeats left them third-bottom, five points behind Forest and seven adrift of in-form Leeds.

The alarming prospect of dropping back into the Championship for the first time in 14 years has brought growing pressure on Nuno.

Relegation was something the controversial move to the 62,500-capacity London Stadium in 2016 was supposed to make far less likely given the increase in revenue it generates.

However, club sources are adamant they remain solidly behind the manager and believe he will turn the situation round if the right changes can be made in January.

They are vowing the money will be found to make new signings, although it is not certain whether that might involve the sale of Brazilian playmaker Lucas Paqueta, who was blocked from leaving West Ham in the summer.

While West Ham would benefit from their rent on the London Stadium halving to £2m should they go down, the overall financial situation would be massively affected if they did finish in the bottom three.

A run of fixtures, starting against out-of-form Brighton on 30 December, that also includes games against Wolves, Forest, Sunderland and local rivals Tottenham and Chelsea before a trip to Burnley on 7 February, is likely to shape West Ham’s near future.

Despite the current internal backing for Nuno, it is possible sentiment could turn if the present situation became even worse.

Manchester United sign Germany international Lea Schuller

Manchester United have signed Germany international Lea Schuller from Bayern Munich.

The 28-year-old, who is contracted until June 2029, becomes the club’s second signing of the January transfer window after full-back Hanna Lundkvist’s arrival.

The experienced forward spent five years at Bayern, making over 100 appearances and helping them win four league titles.

She has scored 54 goals in 82 appearances for Germany and was part of the squad who came runners-up to England at Euro 2022, as well as winning bronze at the 2024 Olympic Games.

“From the first conversations that I had with [manager] Marc [Skinner] and the club, the ambitions of everyone hear were very clear,” said Schuller.

“I still have so much that I want to achieve in my career, and I know that Manchester United is the perfect club to join.

“I feel that the team’s style of football will really suit my game. I hope my qualities and experience can help us to achieve our aims both in England and in the Champions League.”

Matt Johnson, Manchester United’s director of women’s football, said: “Lea’s goal-scoring record is phenomenal, her style of play will give our attack an exciting new dimension. We are delighted to add a player of her pedigree to the group.

“Lea’s winning mentality and experience will really help our young and ambitious team as we continue to grow together and compete across domestic and European competitions.”

United hope to be busy in the transfer window as boss Skinner looks to bolster his squad for the knockout stages of the Women’s Champions League.

They have already agreed a contract extension with key midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has agreed to stay until the summer of 2029.
