An officer at the Rush City correctional facility was taken to a local hospital following an attack by a prisoner Saturday.
According to a press release from the Minnesota Department of Corrections, guards were conducting routine cell searches when they encountered a prisoner who was suspected of being in possession of homemade alcohol.
When officers approached, the prisoner allegedly assaulted an officer with a makeshift shank weapon.
The officer suffered a puncture wound and is currently being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital. Three other officers, who helped subdue the prisoner, were taken to the hospital, evaluated and released.
About 950 people are incarcerated at Rush City.
The inmate who allegedly attacked the officer is serving a life sentence for murder and will be transferred to a maximum-security prison at Oak Park Heights.
The inmate’s name was not released. The case will be referred to the Chisago County Attorney for possible charges.
