Storms dropped more than a half-foot of rain on parts of Minnesota late Thursday into Friday, causing flash flooding that washed out some roads.
A flood warning remains in effect through 9:15 a.m. Saturday for Big Stone County, where the National Weather Service reported rainfall of 3 to 6 inches across the county, with locally higher amounts.
The Big Stone County Sheriff’s Office reported water over roads Friday, including U.S. Highway 75 and State Highway 7 north of Ortonville.
Some roads in the county were closed due to flood damage.
“Flooded roadways may remain impassable for days, while others could clear within hours,” the sheriff’s office reported Friday morning. “Extra precautions should be taken, especially when traveling at night, as water and road damage may be difficult to see.”
The sheriff’s office also reminded people to never drive through flowing water.
With more rain in the forecast, authorities advised property owners along Big Stone Lake to watch for rising water levels, and take steps to secure boats and docks.
To the east, Willmar reported more than 4 inches of rain, and Glencoe and Appleton saw more than 3 inches. The Twin Cities airport recorded more than an inch.
Storms on Thursday night also produced a wind gust of 86 mph near Hutchinson, downing trees and power lines.
