At least one football fan was killed and another was injured on Sunday in Santiago, Chile, during a confrontation between supporter groups linked to Colo Colo and Universidad de Chile, hours before the country’s 199th Superclásico at the Monumental stadium, according to police and medical information carried by EFE.
Authorities’ accounts cited by local media said violence broke out when members of a Universidad de Chile “barra brava” attacked a convoy of Colo Colo supporters travelling toward the stadium. The incident occurred in Pudahuel, in the Metropolitan Region, near General Bonilla and El Salitre, according to preliminary police information.
The deceased suffered gunshot wounds and later died at a medical facility. A second fan was admitted with injuries but was reported to be out of immediate danger, based on medical details reported by local outlets.
Additional disturbances were reported outside the clinic where the injured supporter was taken, but no further casualties were reported, according to police sources cited by the media.
Carabineros said two suspects were arrested and taken to a police station in Pudahuel. At the prosecutor’s request, Chile’s investigative police (PDI) homicide unit was tasked with forensic work and inquiries to clarify the circumstances and determine responsibility, BioBioChile reported.
Authorities did not immediately release the identities of the victims or the detainees. They also did not specify whether the incident would lead to changes in the match-day security deployment as the criminal investigation proceeds.
