Falkirk say sorry to Dundee United over Sibbald announcement

Falkirk have apologised to Dundee United over the way Craig Sibbald’s pre-contract signing was announced, according to the Tannadice club.

Sibbald has agreed to return to his boyhood side in the summer when his United contract expires, with a three-year deal in place.

The 30-year-old spent the first seven years of his professional career with Falkirk before a spell at Livingston, moving to Tannadice in 2022.

Falkirk’s announcement that the midfielder was returning to the club including images of him signing a deal and modelling a Bairns scarf.

United say Falkirk have since been in contact to apologise for the images, which angered some supporters.

A brief statement issued by United read: “Dundee United are aware of an announcement made yesterday by Falkirk FC regarding a pre-contract agreement with one of our players, which included imagery not appropriate to the circumstances.

“We have since received a formal apology from Falkirk, which we have accepted. While we are disappointed with how the situation was handled, we now consider the matter closed.”

After agreeing the deal, Sibbald told Falkirk club media: “I’m very proud to be coming back home where it all started.

“This club means everything to me and I’m delighted to sign a deal to return to my boyhood team that I grew up supporting. I can’t wait to put the Falkirk shirt on again and give everything for the badge.

“The opportunity to come back at this stage of my career feels right and I can’t wait to get started next season.

“Once a bairn always a bairn.”

  • World Cup 2026: Fifa appears to rule out moving Iran’s matches to Mexico

World Cup 2026: Fifa appears to rule out moving Iran’s matches to Mexico

Fifa appears to have ruled out moving Iran’s matches at this summer’s World Cup to Mexico from the United States.

The president of Iran’s football federation had said negotiations were under way to move fixtures in order to ensure their players’ safety.

It comes amid US and Israeli strikes on Iran, which has responded with attacks on Israel and US-allied states in the Gulf.

However, on Tuesday Fifa said in a statement it was looking forward to nations “competing as per the match schedule”.

The US is co-hosting the World Cup, which takes place between 11 June and 19 July, with Canada and Mexico.

Iran are scheduled to face New Zealand on 16 June and Belgium on 21 June, both in Los Angeles, and Egypt in Seattle on 27 June.

Last week US President Donald Trump said that while Iran are “welcome to the World Cup”, he does not think “it is appropriate” they attend “for their own life and safety”.

“When Trump has explicitly stated that he cannot ensure the security of the Iranian national team, we will certainly not travel to America,” said Iranian football federation president Mehdi Taj in a post, external on a social media account belonging to the Iranian embassy in Mexico.

“We are negotiating with Fifa to hold Iran’s World Cup matches in Mexico.”

A Fifa spokesperson said: “Fifa is in regular contact with all participating member associations, including Iran, to discuss planning for the World Cup.

“Fifa is looking forward to all participating teams competing as per the match schedule announced on 6 December 2025.”

  • Sam Kerr scores winner as Australia beat China in Asian Cup

Sam Kerr scores winner as Australia beat China in Asian Cup

Australia started strongly against China, with Chelsea’s Ellie Carpenter, Manchester City’s Mary Fowler and Arsenal’s Foord combining beautifully to give Australia the lead.

Carpenter dazzled with her pace, bursting down the left to latch onto a Fowler pass before passing back to the Manchester City forward, who cut the ball back to Foord to score with a powerful first-time strike.

“The second half was better, but the first half was disappointing,” Matildas head coach Joe Montemurro told Channel 10.

“We scored a very good goal and I thought we were starting to find our rhythm, and then we just backed off.

“We just need to play higher, we need to be braver – but we got the result we wanted.”

There was an exodus from the Women’s Super League at the start of the Asian Cup, with 13 of Australia’s 26-strong squad playing in the English domestic league.

The Champions League quarter-final between Arsenal and Chelsea is scheduled for 24 March, three days after the Asian Cup final, meaning both clubs could be without key players once travel and possible celebrations are factored in.

Australia went into the semi-final knowing they were the first country to qualify for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil thanks to their 2-1 win against North Korea earlier this week.

  • Manchester United’s Tyler Fletcher earns first Scotland U21 call

Manchester United’s Tyler Fletcher earns first Scotland U21 call

His twin Jack, also a midfielder with United, played briefly for Scotland at Under-16 level but has been with England youth sides since.

The brothers played against each other in November during a Under-19s European Championship qualifier.

In July 2023, the pair signed for United from direct rivals Manchester City for a reported combined fee of £1.25m.

Fletcher senior, capped 80 times, is the under-18 coach at Old Trafford and had a two-game stint as caretaker head coach between the departure of Ruben Amorim and the interim appointment of Michael Carrick.

Of the current national senior squad, Lewis Ferguson, Angus Gunn and Lennon Miller have fathers who played for Scotland.

Aberdeen defender Mitchel Frame has also been given a first under-21 call-up ahead of meetings with Czech Republic at Dens Park on March 27 and Portugal in Estoril four days later.

  • Man Utd’s new academy chief Stephen Torpey outlines his vision

Man Utd’s new academy chief Stephen Torpey outlines his vision

Sir Alex Ferguson famously refused to let the media speak to Ryan Giggs in his formative years. Only after the Scot retired did United fully embrace social media platforms.

Now, it is a daily part of life for most young players. Almost all have their own accounts, upload posts after games and like those of their team-mates. JJ Gabriel, the 15-year-old star of United’s Under-18 side, has 442,000 followers on Instagram.

Torpey feels prescriptive rules about how to use social media are pointless. Instead, he prefers to offer advice and guidance.

“It’s not for us to create robots,” he said. “It’s for us to allow individuals to flourish and therefore express themselves in a way they want. We’ve got to look at players as humans, not just a cohort or an age group.

“As much as it’s our job to protect these young people, we’ve got to find the line where we don’t become parents. Our duty is to support parents where they need it.

“As they progress through the club, it becomes a bit different because they’re professional players and then they’re coming to work for a living but I see things happening for eight and nine year olds now, where it’s almost like if he doesn’t have an Instagram account, he’s no good, and if he doesn’t put a baller or flames emoji, he’s obviously not a talented seven year old.

“We can see through that because we don’t know at that point. We might be impressed by little moments of magic but there’s a long way to go. It’s unnecessary pressure in my opinion.”

A number of players within United’s academy are rated highly.

Shea Lacey caught the eye when he made his senior debut in December and is just returning from injury. Both Fletcher twins, Jack and Tyler, have also made their first-team bows in recent weeks.

Below that, defender Dan Armer and midfielder Jim Thwaites have flitted between the under-18s and under-21s, as has Bendito Mantato, who was part of England’s Under-17 World Cup squad earlier in the campaign.

Then there is Gabriel. Top scorer across the Under 18 leagues with 18 goals, he has scored 10 in his last eight games and has attracted attention from all of Europe’s top clubs.

There is a concern internally about how easily he can adapt to a higher level given his small size, which is why he was not drafted into the squad for the FA Cup third round tie at Brighton – he is not allowed to play Premier League because he was 14 in the current school year.

Nevertheless, it is impossible not to get excited by his promise.

“I get the question and I understand it,” Torpey said. “But I’ve got to be careful not to put unnecessary pressure on anyone from the academy. We have some special talent in our groups right now.

“When you look at those types of players they give you these moments of magic and these bits that get you off your seat, JJ is one of those for sure.

“I’m looking for those standout moments and the player you named (Gabriel) is showing those things. But we’ve also got to make sure he’s doing the responsible non-negotiable parts of the game.

“The whole club’s excited by the talent we’re seeing right now. But it is easier to spoil talent than it is to help it to flourish and we’ve got to handle it with care.”

  • VAR error cost Brighton a penalty against Arsenal

VAR error cost Brighton a penalty against Arsenal

Brighton should have been awarded a penalty in their 1-0 loss at home to Arsenal on 4 March, the Premier League’s Key Match Incidents (KMI) Panel has said.

The Seagulls were trailing to Bukayo Saka’s ninth-minute goal when they pushed forward in the third minute of first-half stoppage time.

After a cross was delivered from the left, Brighton midfielder Mats Wieffer tried to run into the box towards the flight of the ball but was hauled to the ground by Gabriel Martinelli.

Referee Chris Kavanagh allowed play to continue and it was cleared by the video assistant referee (VAR), Michael Salisbury.

Fabian Hurzeler complained to fourth official David Webb and the Brighton boss ended up exchanging words with Mikel Arteta on the touchline.

The Premier League Match Centre wrote on X that the VAR “deemed there was no clear and obvious error”.

But the KMI Panel voted 4:1 that a spot-kick should have been awarded on the field, and 3:2 that it was a missed VAR intervention.

The ruling said: “Martinelli is not looking at the ball, holds Weiffer into the area and prevents the Brighton player from challenging for the ball.”

It is the second time this season Arsenal have escaped a VAR penalty in an away game they have won 1-0.

In December, Everton should have been awarded a penalty for William Saliba’s challenge on Thierno Barry. The VAR was Michael Salisbury for that match, too.

There have now been 18 VAR errors logged this season, matching the total for the entire 2024-25 campaign.

From this same gameweek, Leeds United should have been given a penalty in their 1-0 loss at home to Sunderland for Luke O’Nien’s holding offence on Pascal Struijk.

The Gunners have had no VAR mistakes against them.

  • Champions League comebacks: Hope for Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham before second-leg ties

Champions League comebacks: Hope for Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham before second-leg ties

Arguably the greatest comeback of all, this one is so iconic that it has its very own title in France and Spain – La Remontada (The Comeback).

PSG were clinical at home, winning 4-0, but the Nou Camp sensed something special when Luis Suarez scored after just three minutes in the second leg.

Barcelona were two goals to the good at the break courtesy of a Layvin Kurzawa own goal, but still trailed by two goals on aggregate.

Lionel Messi scored a penalty soon after the restart but Edinson Cavani hit back to silence the home faithful, although it wasn’t the pendulum-swinging moment PSG hoped for.

Barcelona, now trailing 5-3, needed three goals in fewer than 30 minutes to achieve a miracle. Neymar scored a free-kick in the 88th minute to offer further hope, before the Brazilian stroked home a 91st-minute penalty to level the tie at 5-5 on aggregate.

But PSG were still heading through on away goals.

Then, with 20 seconds of added time remaining, La Remontada came to fruition when Sergi Roberto turned home Neymar’s chipped pass, with Barcelona becoming the only team in history to overturn a four-goal Champions League deficit.
