What Pantone’s and Insulet’s Omnipod Mango Colorway Means for Patients and Community

From Pod to Pantone: Omnipod Mango becomes an iconic color,” the Insulet press release reads.

How delighted I am to see that Insulet has collaborated with Pantone on developing the Omnipod Mango color for the company’s insulin delivery system.

Here’s some of the story.

So why “Mango?” To celebrate individualism and empowerment…and break away from “the world of traditional blues that dominate the medical and diabetes landscapes.” Instead….a bright tropical orange instead of the “medical blues,” as the color researchers pointed out.

How wonderful is this? Uplifting, joyful, and representative of the Podders community and identity. This collaboration points the way to patient-person-design that informs the products and services people need to use to live….and as the Insulet mission and branding communicates, the method behind this glorious kind of outcome is the company’s, “passion and commitment to improving the lives of people with diabetes and making it a smaller part of life.”

Health Populi’s Hot Points:  We’ve been witnessing the growing muscles of patients-as-self-advocates and community members for many years. It’s been one of the best parts of the work I’ve done to collaborate with patient and advocate communities over time and to work toward leveraging technologies that help scale peoples’ voices, knowledge, and, well, love.

In my “rough guide” to health care this year, I forecasted in the January 2025 trend-cast that plenty of patients would feel quite abandoned and castaway by health care in the U.S. in the new year. Back on 1 January 2025, I couldn’t know what I know now about so many factors that, on the day, were “uncertainties” in my scenario planning for the year.

As patients feel more alone, we need to counter with community. We need greater social cohesion and social health that bolsters our self-assurance and confidence, building trust and empowerment….especially in this era of healthcare grievance.

Here’s a hug to the Insulet and Pantone collaborators…..delivering on the promise of patient-person empowerment, community building, and brightening life for health citizens….
