Will Lennon lift Airdrieonians at in-form Partick Thistle? Watch on BBC

Danny Lennon was a shock appointment to take the reins after player-boss Rhys McCabe – also surprisingly – stepped away.

Lennon can certainly point to plenty of successes. He won the League Cup as a player with Raith Rovers and as manager with St Mirren in 2013.

His last stint in management was a five-year spell with Clyde during which he got them promoted to League One. But that tenure came to an end three years ago.

His return to the dugout came two weeks ago away to Arbroath. As the football fates would have it, former Airdrie striker Nikolay Todorov scored the only goal of the game for the hosts.

The Diamonds have failed to keep a clean sheet in their past six matches. They only managed three shots compared to nine for Arbroath in that last game.

Lennon will hope he can start turning this around at Firhill, which was a special place for him as a player.

As captain, he led the Glasgow club to back-to-back title wins in the old Second and First Divisions at the turn of the century, earning him a place in the club’s Hall of Fame.

However, the reality of the here and now means that Airdrieonians look like rank outsiders to get a result against a side in excellent form.

Partick Thistle’s shock 5-1 defeat away to relegated St Johnstone on the opening weekend caught the eye but has been a complete outlier since – seven wins from nine matches in all competitions tells the story.

Two 3-1 away victories over fancied Ross County in that time underline the success they have enjoyed under Mark Wilson so far.

They go into this off the back of a 3-2 victory over Raith Rovers that leaves them fourth and very much in the running with the leading pack.

Add to this their League Cup success – four wins out of four in the group stage – which has earned them a home tie with Celtic next weekend, and there is plenty to be excited about for the Jags faithful right now.

You can imagine them licking their lips at the prospect of the second-bottom visitors limping into town.

Of course, any team can beat any team in this division…
