Argentina’s jigger lobby has managed to anticipate the beginning of the squid season, advancing the date to next 9 January. According to reports from Mar del Plata, the anticipation of the Argentine squid season 2026 was again adjusted following a letter sent by the Chamber of Argentine Jiggers, CAPA, requesting a review of the Federal Fisheries Council, CFP, Act 33/2025 linked to the beginning of operations south of South latitude parallel 44.

In the CAPA presentation from 11 December the chamber requested to advance the opening date of the squid season for the rest of the jigger fleet that had not previously operated south of parallel 49. In the original act, this segment was allowed to begin on 12 January 2026.

Following consideration, CFP, unanimously decided to partially modify the decision and establish that the opening for the catch of Illex argentines, south of parallel 44 South for the rest of the fleet to become effective from zero hour 9 January 2026.

This means that the definitive scheme for the 2026 squid season is established as follows,

From January 2nd between parallels 49 and 52 South

From January 7th, south of parallel 44 South, exclusively for vessels that have operated to the south of parallel 49 South, during at least three fishing days.

From 9 January, south of parallel 44 South, for the rest of the jigger fleet

The modification introduces a punctual adjustment for the calendar originally approved, keeping the scheme tiered as defined by the technical report from INIDEP (Argentina’s Fisheries Research Institute), but advancing the beginning date for a sector of the fleet that was left with a later authorization.

Parallel to allowing the beginning of the Illex squid season, the union of Maritime Workers, SOMU, on December 19th signed an agreement, by which the percentage of catches in their salaries was updated, considered a milestone in industrial relations for the start of the jiggers’ activities.

However on the political side of the decision, Argentine sources indicate the advance of the Illex season is geared to anticipate foreign fleets operating in the so called mile 201, on the external fringe of Argentina’s EEZ, and those operating with “British usurped Malvinas’ licenses”.

“It has been a joy to see the Falklands’ traditions, celebrations and togetherness that makes a festive season in the Islands so unique.”

The Falkland Islands Governor, Colin Martin-Reynolds has extended a Season’s Greetings to the people of the Islands, adding how wonderful his first five months in the Islands have been outlining how grateful he and his family are to the warmth and welcome reception from the local community.

“As this year draws to a close I wanted to share a short message of thanks and warm wishes.

Since arriving in the Islands in July, Sam, Raphael and I have been deeply touched by the warm welcome we received. Our first five months here have been filled with so many memorable moments, including opportunities to host and attend a whole series of events where we’ve experienced not just the incredible Falklands landscapes and wildlife you’re rightly famous for, and also the community spirit, resilience and warmth that makes these Islands so very special.

As well as enjoying exploring Stanley and its surrounding area, we’ve really enjoyed our visits to the Camp and the West island.

In this of first Christmas year, it’s been a joy to see the Falklands’ traditions, celebrations and togetherness that makes a festive season in the Islands so unique.

We’re looking forward to Carol’s under the Whalebone Arch, to the Stanley races, (fingers crossed) on Boxing Day and the Ram and Fleece show in Fox Bay, next week.

And I am quite sure Falklands lamb, gin, and beer and yes Diddle Dee will feature prominently.

I want to thank everyone for your kindness, all the wonderful conversation and support over these past months.

It really has made settling here an incredible experience; I wish you and all your family, a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.”

Conor McMenamin: Returning to NI squad for Italy play-off ‘a main goal’ for St Mirren player

McMenamin said his NI team-mates were in touch to congratulate him after St Mirren shocked Celtic in the Hampden Park decider.

“All the staff at Northern Ireland, as soon as the final whistle went last week, they were on the phone congratulating me and the team.

“It’s such a close-knit group when we’re away with Northern Ireland, all the players keep in contact even when we’re not together.

“That shows with the results we’ve had and that’s credit to Michael O’Neill and what he has built over the past couple of years. A really tight knit unit and hopefully come March we’ll be ready to go.”

Generally employed in a forward or wing role, McMenamin has been operating in an unaccustomed left wing-back position for his club in recent weeks.

“The last few weeks have been good for everyone involved with the club and when that final whistle went in the cup final you forget about the injuries and all the hard work you have done to get back in the team,” he added.

“To get back playing and to be playing regularly in the team is good for me personally.

“The gaffer [Stephen Robinson] obviously likes the shape and the boys have been playing well. It’s up to us as players to fit into that shape, that’s something we spoke about, me building trust by my performances in that position.

“It’s all about taking chances. We’ve got a great squad so if you’re not doing well someone is there to replace you. It keeps everyone on their toes.

“I think if I’m playing regularly here and doing well that’s all that I can do.”

The Government of Panama will take disciplinary action against several oil tankers registered under its flag targeted by the United States for alleged irregularities, Foreign Minister Javier Martínez-Acha announced Friday. These vessels “failed to respect Panamanian maritime legislation,” he explained.

The initiative was launched by the administration of President José Raúl Mulino following the US interception of the supertanker Centurias in the Caribbean. The ship is suspected of transporting Venezuelan crude in violation of international sanctions.

Preliminary investigations by Panamanian authorities revealed that the Centurias and other vessels utilized classic “shadow fleet” maneuvers to evade detection. Detected irregularities include the deliberate deactivation of satellite tracking systems known as transponders, recent and frequent name changes to the hull, and inconsistencies in documentation. Additionally, unusual behavioral patterns after leaving Venezuelan waters, including “dark” periods during transit have been observed.

“Panama will act to ensure its registry —one of the largest in the world— maintains transparency standards,” Martínez-Acha stated, emphasizing that his country would not allow its flag to be linked to opaque energy trade networks.

As a direct consequence of these violations, the Panama Maritime Authority (AMP) is considering the cancellation of naval registration for the offending ships. De-flagging is the most severe administrative sanction Panama can impose, effectively stripping a vessel of its legal right to sail and making it a pariah in international ports.

The case of the Centurias is part of a broader US offensive against clandestine oil shipments. The US Coast Guard has intensified operations in the Caribbean, targeting a network of ships that sustain the trade of sanctioned crude from Venezuela, Iran, and Russia.

In addition to the Centurias, Washington is tracking other vessels, such as the Bella 1, which is reportedly involved in similar sanctions-evasion schemes involving flags of convenience and identity shifting.

As the maritime blockade of Venezuela intensifies under Operation Southern Spear, both the U.S. and Panama have taken drastic steps to dismantle the “shadow fleet.” However, since the US Navy lacks the domestic legal authority to seize civilian merchant ships, all boarding operations are led by the US Coast Guard (USCG), which acts as the lead law enforcement agency.

So far, two major tankers, the Skipper (on Dec. 10) and the Centuries (on Dec. 20), have been placed under US custody, the latter carrying 1.8 million barrels of crude bound for China.

Milei gets Congressional nod for 2026 Budget

    Saturday, December 27th 2025 – 10:55 UTC

“This is not just another law; it is a turning point for Argentina,” LLA Senator Patricia Bullrich stressed
“This is not just another law; it is a turning point for Argentina,” LLA Senator Patricia Bullrich stressed

President Javier Milei’s La Libertad Avanza (LLA) scored a key parliamentary victory on Friday when the Senate passed by 46 to 25 votes and one abstention the 2026 Budget Bill, enshrining a “zero deficit” fiscal rule. The Upper House also endorsed the so called Fiscal Innocence Act, shielding private savings from state oversight.

LLA’s win came with supporting votes from the Radical Civic Union (UCR), Propuesta Republicana (PRO), and many provincial blocs. Additionally, Peronist senators from Catamarca, Tucumán, and Jujuy broke ranks with Cristina Fernández de Kirchner’s (CFK) leadership to support the government.

The budget sets ambitious macroeconomic goals designed to reassure international markets: GDP Growth 5%; Inflation 10.1% (year end projection); Exchange Rate AR$1,423 / US$1 by December 2026; Fiscal Balance: Primary surplus of 1.5% of GDP, financial surplus 0.2%. Furthermore, exports are expected to rise by 10.6%.

The fiercest debate centered on Article 30, dubbed the “Broom Article” by opponents. While LLA lawmakers argued that fiscal balance was non negotiable, the opposition warned that suspending mandatory funding floors for education, science, and defense hands discretionary power to the Executive, risking severe cuts to universities and research institutions. In the end, Article 30 was approved with 42 votes in favor, 28 against, and 2 abstentions.

The Fiscal Innocence Act was passed with 43 votes in favor and 26 against. The measure introduces a simple affidavit for assets up to AR$10 billion (around US$6.9 million). As per the new Act, taxpayers cannot be treated as criminals for using their savings. Therefore, the tax bureau ARCA will levy income tax only on invoiced earnings, without monitoring equity variations or consumption patterns within the threshold.

Friday’s victory spares Milei from governing by decree, strengthening his institutional credibility. The budget’s zero deficit mandate signals to international markets that Argentina is committed to fiscal discipline, while the Fiscal Innocence Law underscores the government’s libertarian stance on individual property rights, it was explained.

“This is not just another law; it is a turning point for Argentina,” LLA Senator Patricia Bullrich stressed. “We are voting for a country that lives within its means.”

Latam Airlines granted license to operate domestic flights in Argentina

Latam Argentina folded in 2020, citing an unfriendly business climate

Argentina’s Libertarian Government of President Javier Milei has granted Chile’s Latam Airlines a full license to operate any domestic flight the company wishes to offer with the aircraft of its choice, thus making it an internal competitor to other carriers serving the market.

Under Milei’s “Open Skies” policies, Transport Secretariat Provisions 46/2025 and 47/2025 appearing in Friday’s Official Gazette mark a potential return to a market the company exited five years ago.

The new regulatory framework grants the Chilean-Brazilian airline broad “ninth freedom” rights, which allow a foreign carrier to operate flights between two points within Argentine territory without requiring a local subsidiary.

Hence, Latam is now permitted to transport passengers and cargo on regular and non-regular domestic routes with no restrictions on flight frequencies, destinations, or aircraft size, it was explained.

Provision 47/2025 specifically mentions a strategic “fifth freedom” route connecting Santiago with Buenos Aires and on to Rio de Janeiro, allowing the airline to pick up passengers in the Argentine capital and fly them to Brazil, thus strengthening regional hubs.

Under the new rules, Latam has fulfilled all legal requirements under bilateral treaties signed between 1996 and 2024, lifting bureaucratic hurdles so that the airline no longer needs new clearances for each new route, provided safety and operational protocols are met.

Latam issued a statement noting that despite the legal green light, an immediate comeback to Argentina’s skies will not happen shortly. Latam Argentina folded in 2020, citing an unviable economic and regulatory climate during the pandemic. At that time, it held a 20% share of the local market.

The move has been construed as an end to state-protected monopolies. While Latam currently operates in Argentina only via foreign subsidiaries, the way is now cleared for a rentrée should commercial conditions improve.
