England confirm new kits for 2026 World Cup

England have confirmed their new home and away kits which will be worn at this summer’s World Cup.

Once again manufactured by Nike as part of their reported £400m deal with the Football Association (FA), the home shirt has dispensed with the multi-coloured interpretation of the St George’s Cross that caused controversy when the previous strips were unveiled two years ago.

Instead, the inside collar of the latest shirts bear the words ‘happy and glorious’ in a nod to the national anthem, God Save the King.

Set to be worn against Uruguay at Wembley next Friday, Nike described the home strip as a “modern all-white design that honours England’s heritage”.

The shirt has a metallic gold star above the crest to represent the country’s 1966 World Cup triumph.

The away strip reverts to a red shirt, having been purple since 2024, has a centred badge and will be paired with navy shorts.

  • Michael McArdle: Northern Ireland ‘should dream’ of World Cup

Michael McArdle: Northern Ireland ‘should dream’ of World Cup

McArdle was appointed Northern Ireland manager after Tanya Oxtoby stepped down to become first-team manager at Newcastle United.

Following Oxtoby’s departure, Kris Lindsay was introduced as interim manager for the opening two World Cup qualifiers.

McArdle was head of elite women’s football at the Scottish IFA and managed the Scottish national side on an interim basis last year.

“I am hugely proud and excited to be here,” McArdle continued.

“I know a lot about the players, the squad and the exciting pieces of potential both of the senior players and also the young, exciting talent which is growing through the pipeline.

“That is why my skills align – I develop players and coaches and I develop myself through that.”

Northern Ireland are going through a period of transition with many key figures retiring in recent years and younger players breaking into the squad.

McArdle added that it is key to assess the younger players and that he will attend the upcoming U17 European Championships in Northern Ireland in May.

“The pipeline of the younger player’s is crucial,” he continued.

“In over a month, I will be here a lot to see the under-17s play, see the future and also align that future to the senior team.

“A lot of my work will be aligning what the underage coaches do to the national team.”

Alisson: Liverpool goalkeeper to miss Brighton match and out of Brazil squad because of injury

Alisson missed Liverpool‘s Champions League last-16 first leg defeat at Galatasaray on 10 March with what was described as a “minor” issue, with Mamardashvili standing in.

But he returned for Sunday’s draw against Tottenham and the 4-0 victory over Galatasaray in the second leg on Wednesday.

He previously missed eight Liverpool matches across October and November because of a hamstring injury.

Mamardashvili has featured 12 times for Liverpool in all competitions this season.

Liverpool are fifth in the Premier League table, looking to secure Champions League qualification for next season, while Brighton are 12th.

  • Carabao Cup: Pep Guardiola says James Trafford will start final, but Mikel Arteta gives little away

Carabao Cup: Pep Guardiola says James Trafford will start final, but Mikel Arteta gives little away

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has confirmed James Trafford will be in goal for Sunday’s Carabao Cup final at Wembley, but Mikel Arteta has refused to say who will be Arsenal’s starting keeper.

Guardiola said he will continue his policy of playing Trafford in domestic cup matches, although he did not offer any assurances over the 23-year-old’s long-term situation.

Trafford rejoined City from Burnley last summer in a £27m switch and had been seen as the replacement for Ederson.

However, he was soon edged out of a starting spot as the club signed Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris St-Germain.

Asked about Trafford’s recent comments about expecting to play more, Guardiola said: “Players can be happy, unhappy. It is what it is.

“They have to be here to do the best they can do and after we will see what happens at the end of the season. The important thing is they have to be ready.”

He said he was “beyond happy” with Trafford’s attitude, but said his selection came as part of “a big moment for the team”.

Arteta, meanwhile, gave no clue when he spoke to journalists as to who he will start in goal.

Kepa Arrizabalaga has been the north London side’s keeper in domestic cup competitions, with David Raya taking to the field in the Premier League and Champions League.

  • Celtic: ‘Severity’ of Kasper Schmeichel injuries surprises manager Martin O’Neill

Celtic: ‘Severity’ of Kasper Schmeichel injuries surprises manager Martin O’Neill

Celtic, who are second in the Scottish Premiership and two points behind Heart of Midlothian, travel to face Dundee United on Sunday (12:30 GMT).

Right-back Alistair Johnston is nearing a return to fitness after being out for most of the season with hamstring problems.

“He’s doing really well,” O’Neill said of the Canada international.

“His national side want him to go for a week over there. We, at this minute, would probably prefer him to stay. I don’t think it’s going to a big issue as long as he’s training somewhere.

“We need to have some sort of bounce games or something like that to play in here as soon as possible.

“That’s big news if he can come back in for the part of the run-in, so that would be great.”

O’Neill also said Arne Engels is “doing really fine” in his recovery and made similar sentiments about captain Callum McGregor.

Engels last played on 11 February, while fellow midfielder McGregor has missed the past two games.

“He’s fine, he’s going to be fine and he’s come through,” O’Neill said of McGregor.

“We’ll see how he is tomorrow. That was his first real day with the team, but he’s raring to go.”

  • Tottenham: Guglielmo Vicario to have hernia surgery with Antonin Kinsky set to start against Nottingham Forest

Tottenham: Guglielmo Vicario to have hernia surgery with Antonin Kinsky set to start against Nottingham Forest

Kinsky’s first error against Atletico – a slip – led to Marcos Llorente making it 1-0 in the sixth minute, before Antoine Griezmann added a second eight minutes later.

The Czech Republic international was also at fault for Atletico’s third goal, gifting the ball straight to Julian Alvarez to finish easily in the 15th minute.

Kinsky had his head in his hands and was taken off less than two minutes later.

He was not acknowledged by Tudor before he headed down the tunnel.

BBC Sport’s chief football writer Phil McNulty, who was at the match, said he was not sure he had “ever witnessed anything quite like this”.

Former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson, commentating on the game for BBC Radio 5 Live, said at the time: “I have never seen that on a football pitch.

“It will be soul-destroying for Kinsky. I would not be surprised if he was in tears. It is a difficult thing to handle.

“It is selfish from the manager. He knows he will not be here for long.

“It is clearly for self-preservation and with no consideration for the young goalkeeper. The manager certainly has not helped his case.”

  • Ibrahima Konate: Liverpool ‘disgusted’ by racist abuse towards France defender

Ibrahima Konate: Liverpool ‘disgusted’ by racist abuse towards France defender

Liverpool have said they are “appalled and disgusted” by racist abuse directed towards defender Ibrahima Konate on social media.

The France international was involved in a challenge with Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen during the first half of Liverpool‘s 4-0 Champions League win at Anfield on Wednesday.

Osimhen was subbed off at half-time and it was later revealed by the Turkish side that he had fractured his forearm.

It led to Konate receiving racist abuse online which Liverpool said was “completely unacceptable”.

“It is dehumanising, cowardly and rooted in hate,” the club said on Friday.

“Racism has no place in football, no place in society and no place anywhere – online or offline.

“Our players are not targets. They are human beings. The abuse that continues to be directed at players, often hidden behind anonymous accounts, is a stain on the game and on the platforms that allow it to persist.”

The club said they were offering Konate their “full support” and working with the relevant authorities to identify those responsible.

Last month, police confirmed they were investigating after four Premier League players experienced online racial abuse in one weekend.

Osimhen appeared to fall awkwardly following a challenge with Konate in the eighth minute, but he played on until he was replaced by Leroy Sane at the break.

Galatasaray head coach Okan Buruk complained about referee Pawel Raczkowski’s decision-making following the Nigeria striker’s injury.

“Looking at Osimhen’s position, we saw that Konate was able to commit these fouls very easily, he could easily apply any kind of foul,” Buruk said.

“While we were expecting the best referee in the world, perhaps one of the worst referees officiated the game.”

Liverpool won the last-16 tie 4-1 on aggregate and will face holders Paris St-Germain in next month’s quarter-finals.

The club called on social media companies to “take responsibility and act now” to prevent racist abuse being directed towards players online.

“These platforms have the power, the technology and the resources to prevent this abuse, yet too often they fail to do so,” Liverpool said.

“Allowing racist hatred to spread unchecked is a choice – and it is one that continues to harm players, families and communities across the game.

“The current situation cannot be allowed to continue. It must be confronted, challenged and eradicated – not tomorrow, but now.”

  • Rangers: Doubt thrown on ‘direction’ of Derek Cornelius’ career

Rangers: Doubt thrown on ‘direction’ of Derek Cornelius’ career

Cornelius, the one left-sided centre-back in the first-team squad, has made 11 appearances for Rangers, all but one as a starter, and up until his injury made four starts and a substitute appearance in the six games under Rohl after the German took charge in October.

However, Rohl has confirmed that, despite Rangers entering a crucial part of the season as they look to overtake leaders Heart of Midlothian and reigning champions Celtic, the defender has been allowed to miss Saturday’s visit by Aberdeen.

“He will travel today to the national team,” he said. “I gave him the opportunity to go earlier to the national team.

“I had two conversations in the last couple of days with Derek. I will have a conversation when he comes back from the national team again.

“All these things between Derek and me, it’s between us, this is crucial. I have my principles, this is very important.”

Marsh had revealed that he had also spoken to Rohl in attempt to help resolve the situation.

“I think Derek and my person are very clear and it’s the reason we need after the international break one more conversation and then we will see in which direction this goes,” Rohl said.

“I think it was two or three times with Jesse in the conversation. I know him very well, we are good friends, we trust each other.

“In the end, it’s about the club, Rangers on the other side, and this is also important.”

Rohl stressed that he knows “what it means to play a World Cup” and that “I will support Derek” to make sure “he is available” for this summer’s finals for one of the tournament hosts.
