  • Ruben Amorim sacked: Inside Man Utd head coach’s reign at Old Trafford

Ruben Amorim sacked: Inside Man Utd head coach’s reign at Old Trafford

While results were not always good, players remained onside – at least those who were not in the ‘bomb squad’ exiled at the start of pre-season training.

Speaking to players publicly and privately during United’s summer trip to the United States, there was genuine enthusiasm for the season that lay ahead.

Amorim had a few quirks, but most coaches do.

When United opened their doors for the first 15 minutes of training the day before European games, it was strange to see Amorim watch the sprints and rondos on a different pitch – sometimes 50 yards away, and far removed from his coaching staff.

He was far more involved – whistle in hand – when the sessions began, though he wasn’t keen to let the media into those.

There was a full open session in Malaysia on United’s post-season trip in May, but that whole expedition was not run on fully professional lines given the amount of downtime that was allowed.

Once United arrived at their training base in Chicago in July, access was limited. The candour of Amorim’s media conferences was not matched by his openness with training.

He was meticulous in his preparation, though.

Footage of his first training session at United showed him explaining to midfielder Kobbie Mainoo exactly how many strides he needed to move after laying off a pass, then where to open out his body to create maximum passing angles.

In the summer, he had two players taking up the same positions in training, then ran through different scenarios to ensure they moved into the right area of the pitch.

While this may seem peculiar – and would have looked so had anyone witnessed it -it does make sense given individuals were allocated positions and a hierarchy installed.

The theory and practice is good. But events in actual matches take their course.

Amorim could have chosen four players for each position and might not have ended up with Mason Mount at left wing-back, which former United skipper Gary Neville criticised him so strongly for in the wake of a 3-1 defeat at Brentford.

DRC: Refugees in Burundi live in precarious conditions

Actualite.CD informed that the displaced people who were in the Rumonge and Gatumba camps were relocated by the Burundian government to Ruhigi, about 60 kilometers north of Bujumbura, as they were barely surviving in their previous location.

The news outlet stated that they were not receiving humanitarian assistance and complained of the hardships imposed by the harsh weather conditions.

The situation in eastern Congo worsened in early December 2025 with the advance of the Congo River Alliance-March 23 Movement (AFC/M23) on cities in South Kivu near the border with Burundi, leading to the displacement of approximately 500,000 people, some 85,000 of whom fled to the neighboring country.

Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher allocated, in late December, 13.5 million dollars to address the worsening humanitarian impact of the conflict-induced displacement, using resources from the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF).

  • How Wilfried Nancy’s calamitous reign unfolded at Celtic

How Wilfried Nancy’s calamitous reign unfolded at Celtic

O’Neill was afforded the same amount of games in charge as his successor, but that’s where the similarity ends.

Across his eight games, O’Neill won seven, the only blip a 3-1 away loss to Midtjylland in the Europa League.

His reign included beating Rangers in a League Cup semi-final while Feyenoord were humbled in Rotterdam.

O’Neill’s Celtic had cut Hearts’ advantage at the Scottish Premiership summit to three points by the time the leaders were due to visit Parkhead.

The opportunity was there for Nancy, in his debut match, to close that gap completely with a game to spare.

However, despite making a bright opening, Celtic – in the Frenchman’s 3-4-3 system – were stunned by Hearts in a 2-1 defeat.

Nancy’s decision to flip to his favoured formation was instantly criticised, but bizarrely not as much as his choice of footwear or use of a handheld tactics board.

The extreme fallout of the loss introduced the 48-year-old to the brutal nature of football in Glasgow. His eye-catching green and white trainers were never seen again.

“I was pleased with the mentality,” said Nancy. “The performance was really interesting. Defensively, we were really good but we missed the few opportunities.”

Cuban Embassy in the US honors fallen combatants in Venezuela

Gathered this Monday morning at the diplomatic mission, the staff, led by the head of the Mission, Lianys Torres, observed a minute of silence for those who died in the line of duty.

Oscar Larralde, speaking on behalf of his colleagues, said that Saturday’s attack on Venezuela and the kidnapping of a constitutional president is an “attack on the sovereignty of nations,” and in that regard reiterated that “faced with this aggression, we reaffirm our solidarity with the Venezuelan people and their legitimate government.”

“The blood of 32 Cubans,” he added, “stained the soil of Bolivar’s homeland as an example of the solidarity and brotherhood that unite our peoples.”

Let us honor the memory of the fallen heroes, Larralde emphasized, insisting that the example of “those who gave everything in the line of duty should guide us.”

Cuba has been threatened, hawks are circling, he noted, “just remember, imperialist gentlemen, the thought of Major General Antonio Maceo, the Bronze Titan of the wars of independence, when he established a position, a principle, before the then Spanish metropolis, warning that Cuba’s independence would never be negotiable.”

The official repeated the words of the brave Cuban warrior that “whoever tries to seize Cuba will only gather the dust of its soil soaked in blood if they do not perish in the struggle.”

With emotion and fervor, all members of the diplomatic delegation sang the National Anthem and shouted cheers for Cuba, the Revolution, and its leaders.

  • Maddy Cusack: Inquest into Sheffield United footballer’s death delayed again

Maddy Cusack: Inquest into Sheffield United footballer’s death delayed again

Sheffield United have denied deliberately delaying the inquest into the death of their former women’s team captain Maddy Cusack.

Cusack died suddenly aged 27 in September 2023, with police saying the circumstances were not considered suspicious.

Afterwards, her family claimed that pressure had been put on Cusack by “processes and conduct” at Sheffield United, including allegations over the behaviour of former manager Jonathan Morgan.

Her inquest was originally scheduled for April last year, before being rearranged for this month.

But on Monday at Chesterfield Coroners Court, the process was pushed back until 29 June.

Lawyers representing the Cusack family said that “it is extremely disappointing” that Sheffield United provided 699 pages of documents just before Christmas, having originally been given a late November deadline.

The new documents include a statement from Cheryl Anderson, the club’s head of safeguarding.

Dean Armstrong KC, representing the Cusacks, told the court: “The family found themselves, already at the most difficult time in their lives, having to try and get to grips with 700 pages of material a week before Christmas for a hearing the first day after the Christmas break.

“We deem that unacceptable. It has had an impact on them.”

Joseph O’Brien KC, on behalf of Sheffield United, replied: “The complaints are wholly misplaced. We reject entirely any suggestion of non-compliance.

“We have made strenuous efforts to make sure information was sent to relevant parties. The suggestion we have in some way contributed to the adjournment by non-compliance is wholly without merit.”

The coroner added that court procedures and the need to make redactions to documents had contributed to the delay.

Sri Lanka condemns US kidnapping of Maduro as piracy

It remembered similar acts committed by the US empire, such as the kidnapping of Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide and the assassination of Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The CPSL also condemned the deliberate bombing of civilian infrastructure in Venezuela, primarily targeting facilities essential to the daily lives and well-being of the Venezuelan people, causing civilian casualties and severe hardship for the civilian population.

These actions, which are a grave violation of international law and meet the definition of a war crime, bear a disturbing resemblance to the systematic destruction of civilian infrastructure carried out in Iraq before the 2003 invasion, the party stated.

The Sri Lankan party added that this aggression cannot be separated from the broader imperialist objectives historically pursued by the United States to seize Venezuela’s wealth.

It also reiterated its firm rejection of these actions and its solidarity with the Venezuelan people, who continue to resist foreign interference and defend their sovereignty.

US Begins preparations to reopen Embassy in Caracas after Maduro’s capture

Trump had already indicated on Sunday, speaking aboard Air Force One, that Washington is considering restoring its diplomatic presence in Venezuela

The United States confirmed on Monday that it is “making the necessary preparations” to potentially reopen its embassy in Caracas, closed since 2019, following the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro during a U.S. military operation carried out early Saturday.

A State Department spokesperson told EFE that the move remains contingent on a final decision by President Donald Trump. “As the president has said, we are making the necessary preparations to allow a reopening should he decide to move forward,” the official stated.

Trump had already indicated on Sunday, speaking aboard Air Force One, that Washington is considering restoring its diplomatic presence in Venezuela, marking a major shift after years of severed relations.

The U.S. embassy in Caracas, located in the municipality of Baruta, was shut down in 2019 after Maduro’s government formally broke ties with Washington. Since then, U.S. policy toward Venezuela has been managed through the External Office for Venezuela based at the U.S. Embassy in Bogotá.

The announcement comes amid acute political uncertainty in Venezuela, as Maduro appeared for the first time on Monday before a federal court in New York to face four charges, including narco-terrorism, according to U.S. authorities.

Trump has further fueled controversy by stating that U.S. officials will govern Venezuela temporarily until what he described as a “safe transition” is achieved, while also casting doubt on opposition leader María Corina Machado’s ability to lead the country. “She does not have sufficient support or respect inside Venezuela,” Trump said.

No timeline or concrete conditions have been announced for the embassy’s reopening, which would depend on security assessments, political recognition, and effective control on the ground, according to diplomatic sources.

Mexican President says people can limit Trump

“The people and the strength of Mexico,” the head of the Executive Branch responded from the National Palace to a question at her usual press conference about who can limit Trump when he doesn’t even respect his own country’s laws.

In that regard, the president emphasized that for this reason, Mexico must remain united and with a clear vision, because “that vision is established by our Constitution, and the defense of our sovereignty must be part of everyone’s position.”

“There are some who don’t, who seek external intervention to strengthen themselves, but that leads nowhere. Those who think that by strengthening themselves abroad they will have a greater presence with the people are mistaken,” she maintained, alluding to certain sectors of the opposition.

Furthermore, the president asserted that she does not see any risk of a US intervention in Mexico.

Remembering that Trump has repeatedly insisted on allowing the U.S. military to enter Mexico, supposedly to combat drug trafficking, Sheinbaum emphasized that her government has firmly rejected this proposal, arguing that it defends the country’s sovereignty and, moreover, that it is unnecessary.

“The problem of insecurity and violence in Mexico stemming from organized crime cannot be solved through intervention. We have proposed a comprehensive strategy that addresses the root causes and promotes zero impunity, focusing on four key areas,” she stated.

  • O’Neill returns to Celtic for rest of season

O’Neill returns to Celtic for rest of season

Martin O’Neill is returning to Celtic as manager for the remainder of the season following the dismissal of Wilfried Nancy.

The 73-year-old stepped in for eight games in the wake of Brendan Rodgers’ exit in October, winning seven of those.

He made way for Nancy in early December but the Frenchman departed on Monday after a sorry run of just two wins from eight matches.

“I am really pleased, in fact, very honoured to be asked back to manage the team again and I am looking forward to getting back to work again with the players,” O’Neill told club media.

“I know we would all have hoped for things to have worked out differently under Wilfried and I personally want to wish him good luck with everything he does in the game. He is a fine man and I am sure he will go on and achieve success again, I have no doubt of that.

“For me, I’ve been asked to take this great job on again and my focus will be to try and get us back to winning ways if we can. We will need everyone right behind us.”

O’Neill, who won seven trophies with Celtic from 2000-05, will again be assisted by Shaun Maloney, Mark Fotheringham and Stephen McManus.

Celtic, champions in 13 of the past 14 seasons, currently sit second in the Scottish Premiership, six points behind Hearts and ahead of Rangers on goals scored.

Under Nancy, they were beaten in the League Cup final by St Mirren, with O’Neill having overseen the semi-final win over Rangers.

“We still have a lot to look forward to and a lot to try and achieve, and myself, Shaun and the coaching staff and, of course, the players will be giving everything to achieve all the success we can for the club,” added O’Neill.
