Honor and Glory in Cuba to its fallen combatants in Venezuela

“Honor and glory to the 32 Cuban heroes who lost their lives defending the Venezuelan people against the United States’ attack on that sister nation,” added the Hermanos Saíz Association (AHS) on its Facebook page.

The organization, which brings together the young artistic vanguard in Cuba, echoed the statement of the intellectual and president of Casa de las Américas, Abel Prieto, quoting his words:

“Eternal glory to our fallen comrades!!!” It is worth remembering that the Cuban writer, during his address at the Anti-Imperialist Tribune in Havana, urged everyone to “knock on every door so that the truth about this sinister plan to seize Venezuela’s wealth is made public.” “We must stop the forces of hatred, war, and fascism, and defend the right to peace, life, solidarity, sovereignty, and justice,” he asserted.

The AHS also remembered the messages of the renowned singer-songwriter Silvio Rodriguez and the duet Buena Fe, through which the latter praised the dedication and sacrifice for their homeland and for Latin America of the “32 Cuban brothers who fell in the line of duty.”

“All peace-loving people, all human beings with dignity across the world, international organizations, peoples, and governments must stop all this madness from the power elite in the United States and its president, who believes himself to be emperor of the world,” wrote the national president of the AHS, Yasel Toledo.

Hungary: Aggression to Venezuela confirms collapse of liberal order

In a Facebook post, Orban expressed that the action ordered by President Donald Trump to kidnap Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro is “further proof” of the collapse of a geopolitical model.

The first days of this year reminded us that the liberal world order is disintegrating. The new world is only just beginning to take shape, and the years to come will be even more unstable, unpredictable, and dangerous, warned the Hungarian leader, while reaffirming his government’s commitment to “the path of peace and security.”

Orban stressed that, should his Fidesz party win the parliamentary elections in April, Hungary “will stay out of the war in Ukraine” and will refuse to send its youth to the front lines or commit its economy to foreign conflicts.

“Our priority is to protect Hungarians, not to fuel wars driven by hegemonic logics that have already proven their failure,” he declared.

Analysts close to the multipolar worldview believe that Budapest’s stance reflects a growing rejection in Europe of the continent’s instrumentalization in disputes that do not serve its sovereign interests.

The Hungarian prime minister also expressed his hope that the conflict in Ukraine will find a diplomatic solution by 2026 and that Western sanctions against Russia will be lifted, a measure he considers essential for European economic recovery and regional stabilization.

  • ‘Nancy blunder evidence of Celtic’s blurred vision’

‘Nancy blunder evidence of Celtic’s blurred vision’

The Frenchman talked about building castles in the sky. He laboured under the fatal impression that he had time to deliver his vision and that he deserved patience. In his parallel universe he said that winning wasn’t everything while his masterpiece was under construction.

It was all about the “process.” He called on people to look at his past record as evidence of his ability. “Do your job,” he told journalists the day before failing to do his in a 3-1 home loss to Rangers, following on from a 2-0 defeat by Motherwell.

Nancy and Tisdale had to go. What’s also obvious is that the hapless state of the club goes way deeper than those two over-promoted characters. It goes back to who ratified their appointments and why. It goes back to Celtic not just losing their way on the field but off it. It goes to the very top.

Celtic have now lost a manager, a head of football operations and a chairman (Peter Lawwell, driven out by an abusive element in the support) since Hogmanay.

The lack of communication from the club is remarkable. Never mind the extreme elements of the support, regular fans – the vast, vast majority – feel a profound disconnection, an alienation from what is going on.

There is a sense of entitlement among some, for sure, and it’s easy to poke fun at that given all the titles Celtic have won. But, elsewhere, there’s just an anger about a club on the drift, making lousy decisions, going backwards domestically and in Europe while sitting on close to £80m in the bank.

These fans talk of a lack of ambition, a lack of a plan under the current board, led by Michael Nicholson, the chief executive, and Dermot Desmond, the major shareholder, and the power in the shadows.

Celtic’s vision seems to amount to staying ahead of Rangers and seeing what they can get out of Europe, if anything.

Brendan Rodgers railed against that thinking and his relationship with the powerbrokers at the club crashed and burned. There was a callousness about his exit and the brutal words about him from Desmond. Rodgers, for all his flaws, did not deserve that.

His assistant manager, John Kennedy, also left at that time. Kennedy had been at Celtic for 27 years as player and coach and yet he was given barely a sentence in a statement when he departed. He deserved more. It’s a legitimate question to ask – where’s the dignity and the class?

There’s not a big picture view at Celtic, or not one that’s apparent. Celtic could finish off their stadium and make it a near 80,000 citadel, one of the continent’s best, but they haven’t done it.

They could build one of football’s greatest museums – lord knows they have enough icons and great moments to fill it – but there’s no sign of it.

They could have deployed a modern and razor-sharp scouting system, but they haven’t done that either.

They bob along, cash-rich and content with bossing it parochially, but even that is now at risk. The emergence of Hearts and the support they’re getting from Tony Bloom and Jamestown Analytics is threatening to change the game in a very significant way.

Celtic thought they could take a gamble on Nancy because they couldn’t imagine a world where any other side could rival their hold over the league title, their bread and butter.

Guyana High Court Rejects Bid To Halt Extradition Proceedings Against Nazar And Azruddin Mohamed

News Americas, Georgetown, Guyana, Jan. 6, 2026: Guyana’s High Court has refused an application by businessmen Nazar Mohamed and his son, leader of the WIN, political party and presumed opposition leader, Azruddin Mohamed, to halt ongoing extradition proceedings in the Magistrate’s Court while their constitutional challenge to the country’s extradition laws is determined.

Azruddin Mohamed stands with his lawyers outside the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court during his ongoing US extradition proceedings.
FLASHBACK – Azruddin Mohamed stands with his lawyers outside the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court during his ongoing US extradition proceedings.

In a ruling delivered today, Acting Chief Justice Navindra Singh, found that the applicants failed to satisfy the high legal threshold required for an interim stay of the committal proceedings, which are currently before Judy Latchman. The extradition hearings are set to continue on Tuesday.

The extradition request was initiated by the United States Government under the 1931 Extradition Treaty between the United States of America and Great Britain. Following an Authority to Proceed issued by Guyana’s Minister of Home Affairs, the Mohameds were arrested on October 31, 2025, and later released on bail pending the outcome of the committal proceedings.

Before the Magistrate’s Court, the applicants challenged the constitutionality of the Fugitive Offenders (Amendment) Act 2009 and sought a referral of constitutional questions to the High Court. That application was rejected by Magistrate Latchman, who ruled that the issues raised were frivolous and vexatious. The Mohameds subsequently filed a Fixed Date Application in the High Court and requested a stay of the extradition process.

In refusing the stay, Chief Justice Singh stressed that the filing of constitutional proceedings does not automatically suspend parallel statutory processes. He noted that stays in extradition matters are “exceptional, not routine,” and outlined three guiding considerations: whether the constitutional challenge raises serious and arguable issues, whether irreparable prejudice would result if proceedings continue, and where the balance of convenience lies between private rights and the public interest.

Addressing the applicants’ arguments, the Court rejected claims that the 2009 amendments unlawfully permit the Minister to bypass judicial oversight. The Chief Justice ruled that the legislation allows the Minister only to determine whether extradition proceedings should commence, while the courts retain full authority over committal hearings. He found no evidence that the Minister had attempted to circumvent judicial scrutiny in this case.

The Court also dismissed arguments that the amendments improperly cure alleged deficiencies in the 1931 treaty, including the absence of an express safeguard against onward extradition to a third state. Chief Justice Singh observed that such protection may exist by implication within the treaty and, in any event, noted that the United States has provided written assurances that the Mohameds would not be extradited to a third country without Guyana’s consent.

On claims relating to access to justice, the Chief Justice found no merit in the contention that the amendments restrict judicial remedies. He pointed out that safeguards such as habeas corpus remain available should the applicants be committed for extradition.

The Court further held that no irreparable harm would arise from allowing the committal proceedings to continue, noting that extradition hearings are preliminary in nature and do not determine guilt or innocence. Chief Justice Singh emphasized that no surrender order is imminent and that the substantive constitutional challenge is scheduled to be heard next week.

Balancing the competing interests, the Chief Justice concluded that the public interest in upholding Guyana’s international obligations and preventing abuse of constitutional litigation outweighed the applicants’ request for interim relief. He cautioned that routinely granting stays in extradition cases could undermine confidence in the administration of justice.

The application for a stay was therefore refused, with costs awarded. The substantive constitutional challenge is scheduled to be heard on January 14, 2026.

  • Maduro: I’m innocent, I am still the president of Venezuela

Maduro: I’m innocent, I am still the president of Venezuela

Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, pleaded not guilty to federal charges of drug trafficking and weapons possession, just 48 hours after special military teams from the United States Army, in violation of Venezuelan sovereignty, forcibly removed them and transferred them to New York for prosecution.

Both appeared before Federal Judge Alvin Hellerstein in the federal court in lower Manhattan and, according to television footage, were transported under heavy security from the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn hours before the hearing.

The defense of the Venezuelan leader was taken over by Barry Pollack, a veteran trial lawyer who represented WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and helped negotiate the plea deal that led to his release in 2024.

In Flores’ case, her lawyer is Texas-based Mark Donnelly, according to court documents.

The hearing that just concluded marks the beginning of what will likely be months of legal proceedings leading up to a possible criminal trial.

Defense attorneys said their clients are currently seeking bail.

The constitutional president of the South American nation and his partner were kidnapped in what President Donald Trump described as a “full-scale attack on Venezuela and its leader” following an unprecedented campaign of pressure on Caracas in recent months.

Maduro faces four charges, including narcoterrorism, conspiracy to import cocaine, and weapons-related offenses.

The indictment against Maduro and Flores was made public on Saturday and includes four other co-defendants, among them Maduro’s son and Venezuela’s Interior Minister, Diosdado Cabello.

Man City:Josko Gvardiol to have surgery on broken shinbone

Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol will have surgery later this week after breaking his shinbone in Sunday’s 1-1 Premier League draw with Chelsea.

Croatia international Gvardiol, 23, was withdrawn after 51 minutes against Chelsea, while his fellow central defender Ruben Dias also went off injured half an hour later.

In a statement, City said they were still trying to “ascertain the full extent” of Gvardiol’s injury and his expected recovery time.

In a post on Instagram,, external Gvardiol thanked fans for their support and wrote: “This is a hard moment, but it will never define me. I know who I am and where I come from.”

He added: “I’ll fight every day to return stronger. I will rise again, better than ever.”

Meanwhile, City have recalled academy product Max Alleyne from his loan spell at Championship side Watford and he could be involved in the squad for Wednesday’s Premier League game against Brighton.

The 20-year-old – son of former England cricketer and current Gloucestershire head coach Mark Alleyne – made 17 appearances for the Hornets after joining on a season’s loan.

But with England centre-back John Stones also currently sidelined, that deal has been cut short as Pep Guardiola’s side, who are exploring a January move for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, try to tackle their growing injury crisis in defence.

Peru: Following the attack on Venezuela, Latin America is in danger

“It would be naive to think that after this attack on Venezuela, the path is not being paved for other possible incursions in the region,” declared analyst Ramiro Escobar, a specialist in International Relations.

He specified that this frame opened up after the attack on Venezuela will have an impact on the political processes of Latin America and, in the case of Peru, will be subject to interference from the Donald Trump regime.

“We are going to have elections in April, and the imprint, the influence of Trump, will clearly be felt in them,” he commented, something that other analysts had already predicted after the open interference of the US president himself in the elections in Honduras.

For his part, analyst Juan de la Puente, a critic of the Venezuelan government like Escobar, said that, regardless, “International Law exist”, prohibiting the use of force and enshrining national sovereignty,” Washington has broken up.

He added that “Trump is not a democrat, nor does he aspire to be one,” and is dragging America back to the 1950s, while part of the region applauds.

With a touch of sarcasm, he asked if, after the attack, the colonial-minded sector of Latin America had finally realized that “Maduro fell but not his regime, that the United States is interested in oil and not democracy, and that this is more like Iraq and the (lie) of ‘weapons of mass destruction.’”

Meanwhile, Roberto Sanchez, one of Peru’s left-wing presidential candidates, challenged the other candidates to speak out “against the unacceptable imperial arrogance.”

  • Manchester United must stop experiments and get manager who fits their way – Gary Neville

Manchester United must stop experiments and get manager who fits their way – Gary Neville

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes succeeding Amorim at United would be “an attractive job” for “any manager”.

“It’s one of the biggest clubs in the world and always will be,” he told Sky Sports.

“Imagine being the guy who gets it right. And someone sooner or later will get it right at United. The club is too big to consistently fail.”

But Neville believe it would be “clever” for the club to wait until the summer to name a permanent manager.

“I don’t think the manager pool is full right now in terms of great talents,” he said.

“Look at Chelsea bringing in Liam Rosenior. That is not what Chelsea are used to or should expect and that’s not being disrespectful to Rosenior.

“I am not sure where United would go but I think it’s clever to wait till the summer when maybe there will be more coaches available from other clubs and the World Cup situation.”

Rene Meulensteen, who spent six years as United’s first-team coach, urged the club to hire a replacement who knows how to win in the Premier League.

“They don’t want to make another mistake and very quickly go for someone that they’re sort of trying to fill the void with,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“They need somebody with pedigree. Someone who understands the Premier League, who’s been successful in the Premier League.

“Someone with a strong personality, with charisma. Someone with good vision about how to take United forward.”

Former United goalkeeper Mark Bosnich added: “It should be about the club and the team doing well.

“Because right now, the supporters will be tearing their hair out because they want to know what’s going on and they deserve to know what’s going on. It’s a complete mess.”
