Falklands, Argentina recalls the 193 anniversary of UK “illegitimate” occupation and calls for bilateral dialogue

    Saturday, January 3rd 2026 – 22:03 UTC

In its annual routine statement, the Argentine Foreign ministry has recalled the 193rd anniversary of 3 January 1833, when ‘the illegitimate occupation of the Malvinas Islands’ and ‘has reaffirmed its legitimate and imprescriptible sovereignty rights over the Malvinas, South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands and their surrounding maritime spaces’.

The release points out that “On 3 January 1833 United Kingdom forces occupied the Malvinas islands breaking the territorial integrity of our country and dislodging the Argentine authorities and people legitimately established, replacing them with British subjects. This action done in times of peace and contrary to international Law, was never consented by Argentina, which has since formulated immediate and sustained diplomatic protests until currently.

“The sovereignty dispute was acknowledged by the UN General Assembly with Resolution 2065 (XX), calling on Argentina and the United Kingdom to resolve it through bilateral negotiations, without having the self-determination principle considered applicable. This call has been reiterated in numerous international and regional forae.

“Likewise this year will be the 50th anniversary of Resolution 31/49 from the UN General Assembly, calling on both sides to abstain from adopting decisions which entail the introduction of unilateral modifications to this situation.

“Nevertheless the UK persists in its negative to negotiate and in adopting unilateral actions in the disputed zone. These actions include awarding illegal and illegitimate licenses for the exploitation of natural resources: fishing and hydrocarbons.

“The Argentine government again expresses its most emphatic rejection of the unilateral activities in areas under sovereignty dispute undertaken by the UK, and reserves the rights to fully exercise available actions to impede their development.

“Finally, Argentina once again expresses its willingness to resume bilateral negotiations with UK which help find a peaceful solution to this sovereignty dispute and put an end to the special and particular colonial situation of the Malvinas, South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands and their surrounding maritime spaces.”

Canadian politicians decry US aAtack on Venezuela

Before US President Donald Trump confirmed the attack on Venezuela, the interim leader of the New Democratic Party, Don Davies, posted on social media that if the action were true, it would be a flagrant violation of international law and the rules-based system that the United States claims to support.

“Canada must strongly condemn this attack and call for an immediate end to the US aggression against the sovereign state of Venezuela,” Davies stated. Meanwhile, the leader of the Bloc Quebecois, Yves-Francois Blanchet, expressed his concern that the United States “is acting as a policeman at the risk of ignoring international law, particularly by resorting to military force that endangers the lives of civilians and by kidnapping a head of state, even if illegitimate.”

However, contrary to the logic of international law, politicians like the leader of the conservatives, Pierre Poilievre, spoke out in favor of the bombings carried out by the United States in several Venezuelan states, and the kidnapping of the constitutional president of the South American nation, Nicolas Maduro, and his wife, Cilia Flores.

This morning, in a press conference, Trump made clear the United States’ interests in Venezuelan oil and its threats to other countries that do not follow the dictates of the White House.

  • Declan Rice: Arsenal midfielder ‘stretches himself to limit’ before another ‘masterclass’

Declan Rice: Arsenal midfielder ‘stretches himself to limit’ before another ‘masterclass’

Rice has continued to flourish for Arsenal in a more attacking midfield role – having initially been a defensive midfielder for West Ham, and when first moving to the Emirates.

This season he has played more passes into the box than any other Premier League player – 146.

He ranks in the top 10 for touches, chances created and times he has won possession.

Rice has four Premier League goals this season – only Viktor Gyokeres and Leandro Trossard (both five) have more for the Gunners – while Belgian forward Trossard is his only team-mate to top his three assists.

Meanwhile, Rice is the top-ranking Arsenal player for line-breaking passes (142) and progressive carries (188).

Arteta said: “He is extremely consistent on everything that you ask him to do, and that is what makes the difference.

“Firstly, he has the abilities and the qualities to achieve that, but then you need the consistency to do it, and he is doing it every single day, and then you see that kind of performance.”

On being told it was the first time he has scored twice in a league game, Rice told Sky Sports: “That’s a crazy stat.

“I haven’t scored a lot this season, I’d only scored two, so to grab a brace today in an important victory was a really nice feeling. When you win and you’re able to help out the team like I did today always adds that extra bit of a special feeling.”

Rice has scored five goals in 12 Premier League games against Bournemouth, more than double the goals he has scored against any other team in the league.

U.S. President Donald Trump said Washington will govern Venezuela until a “safe transition” is achieved, following the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro in a large-scale military operation.

“We are going to govern Venezuela until there is a safe transition,” Trump said at his first press conference after the arrest, warning that further strikes would follow if pro-Maduro forces resist. He also dismissed opposition leader María Corina Machado, saying she lacks “the support and respect” needed to lead a transition.

Trump confirmed that about 150 aircraft took part in the operation and said U.S. companies would take over Venezuela’s oil industry. “No other nation could have done this,” he added.

Venezuela’s Vice President Delcy Rodríguez demanded Maduro’s release and rejected any foreign control. “Venezuela will not be anyone’s colony,” she said, denying Trump’s claim that she had offered cooperation.

The statements follow air strikes carried out during the early hours of Saturday in Caracas and other locations, the de facto closure of Venezuelan airspace, and the transfer of Maduro and his wife to the United States to face drug trafficking and weapons charges. The situation remains fluid.

Venezuelan Vice President demands iImediate release of Maduro

In a national radio and television broadcast, the vice president announced the activation of the state of emergency decree signed by the president following the threat of imperialist aggression.

She delivered the decree to the president of the Supreme Court of Justice for its immediate implementation.

Rodriguez declared that this armed aggression constitutes “a terrible stain on the development of bilateral relations” with the United States, and that President Nicolas Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores were captured during the operation.

She reiterated that the true goal of the aggression is to seize energy, mineral, and natural resources, and that “the world and the international community must know this.”

Rodriguez emphasized that the people of Venezuela are takinged the streets, responding to a call made by the President of the Republic, who warned that if anything were to happen to him, “the people will be mobilized in the streets, militant groups will be at their workplaces, and the Bolivarian National Armed Forces will be activated and deployed.”

She stated that the entire National Power of Venezuela is activated to reaffirm what we are by inheritance as children of Simon Bolivar, and to uphold the sacred duty of safeguarding national independence, including sovereignty and territorial integrity, which were “savagely attacked in the early hours of this morning.”

She said that the international community has joined in and raised its voices in support of Venezuela from China, Russia, Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia.

“The governments of the world are simply shocked that Venezuela is the victim and target of an attack of this nature, which has Zionist undertones,” she added.

Motherwell: How far can Jens Berthel Askou’s ‘extremely ambitious’ side go?

Perhaps most telling of all, on a bitterly freezing afternoon against St Mirren, more than 7,000 supporters draped in claret and amber turned out.

They know these are the days of their dreams.

Smiles from Tuesday’s wiping of the floor with Celtic were still ear-to-ear as positive punters pitched up at Fir Park, but many knew their grins would quickly be gone if the visitors from Paisley were not seen to.

Pre-match, the steady Askou refused to get caught up in the plentiful plaudits his side have been paid in the recent days and instead focused on the threat of St Mirren, highlighting how they outdid them at Hampden two months ago.

In truth, his worries never appeared to be realised.

Though the visitors started on the front foot, their few flurries forward were fruitless with Well’s backline unbothered as they cruised to their seventh straight home clean sheet.

And not for the first time this season, as soon as Motherwell settled, they were never troubled.

“I have to give all the credit to the players out there,” Askou told BBC Scotland post-match.

“We’ve had some trouble with St Mirren so it was a sweet feeling to get our revenge.

“They produced a lot of great moments, two beautiful goals and chances for more while we were extremely focused in defence, won a lot of duels and second balls in some critical areas.”

Vicepresidenta Delcy Rodriguez remains in Venezuela

“The first thing President Maduro told the people of Venezuela was, ‘People to the streets, and all plans are activated,’” the Vice President stated during a phone call to the Venezuelan Television channel, according to a report by La Iguana TV.

Earlier today, international media outlets attempted to promote the narrative that Rodriguez was in Russia, where she supposedly “had a visit planned before the attack.”

This Saturday, Delcy Rodriguez denounced the aggression perpetrated by U.S. military forces against Venezuela and the kidnapping of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, demanding proof of life for the Bolivarian leader and the First Lady.

Scottish Premiership: Dundee do ‘dirty side well’ in ‘incredible team performance’ against Dundee United

Having beaten Falkirk 1-0 and Kilmarnock 2-1 at Dens since Christmas, Dundee went along the road to Tannadice full of confidence and were able to celebrate at full-time with a jubilant away end.

Dundee are now unbeaten on their past four visits to Tannadice and avenged their derby defeat at Dens earlier in the season.

“We knew coming into this game – we’re on the back of two really important results – but we know the importance of this game,” Pressley said.

“It was a pivotal game and I couldn’t be prouder of the players.”

Former United manager Ian McCall was at Tannadice as a pundit having also watched Dundee lose 1-0 at Motherwell on 20 December.

He was impressed by the improvement since that game and says the result was “thoroughly deserved”.

“Dundee had no attacking intent at Motherwell,” he said.

“It’s only two or three weeks later, but they look full of confidence. The Dundee United back three didn’t know how to handle Ashley Hay.

“Fair play to Steven Pressley. You can comment on his record, but you can never think he won’t be up for a fight.”

Before Dundee stunned Celtic in October, they struggled in the league, winning only one of their first eight matches.

Pressley admits he has been through tough moments during a testing campaign, but says his players have kept him going.

“They are an amazing group,” he said. “It’s been a difficult season and they have helped me get out of my bed at times.

“I love working with them – every day they want to be better and they are beginning to find their way. Hopefully this is the start of something good.

“I know there will be moments where you have setbacks, but as long as we stay strong, hopefully we can build something.”

Growing expressions of rejection in Venezuela against US attacks

The governor of Zulia state, Luis Caldera, denounced what he called a treacherous and illegal attack perpetrated by the Donald Trump administration against the sovereignty of the Republic.

He denounced the detention of President Maduro and the First Lady as a kidnapping that flagrantly violates all the norms of the United Nations system and international law.

The governor assured that the people of Zulia will not yield to foreign pressure and will remain steadfast in their struggle until democratic order is restored and Maduro and Cilia are freed.

In Lara state, Governor Luis Reyes also called on the people to remain in the streets in defense of the homeland, declaring that they had moved “from unarmed to armed struggle.”

Reyes asserted that the U.S. government perpetrated a “criminal aggression against strategic targets in Caracas, Miranda, La Guaira, and Aragua,” and emphasized that “this audacity will cost them dearly.”

In Barquisimeto, Lara state, people took to the streets to gather in Bolivar Square and condemn the airstrikes that occurred early this morning, against civilian and military installations.

Images showed widespread destruction, such as at Fort Tiuna in Caracas.

The governor of La Guaira state, Alejandro Teran, revealed that at least 10 missiles struck medicine warehouses in that area.
