  • Nancy wants ‘really happy’ Maeda to stay at Celtic

Nancy wants ‘really happy’ Maeda to stay at Celtic

Maeda has been used through the middle and wide on the left since arriving from Yokohama F Marinos in 2022 and Nancy is delighted to have both options.

“When he starts in the middle, he makes the run on the side to attack,” he said.

“When he starts on the side, he makes the run towards the net. So this is all about this kind of situation.

“After that, he can be good also as a number nine but he needs players around him.

“He’s a player who can keep the ball but he likes to make the run, he likes to combine.

“But also, tactically, he’s really interesting because when I have him on the side, I know that something will happen.

“Or we can use the fact that he’s on the wing to be able to attack through the middle. So it depends.”

Celtic have been profligate in the four defeats and one win Nancy has overseen, while a total of 29 goals from 17 league games is down 19 from the same stage last season.

Asked if a new striker was among his priorities in January, Nancy replied: “Yes, but if you watch the [3-1 win over Aberdeen on Sunday] game, we missed many opportunities and it was not a forward.

“We’ll see what we’re going to do with that. My job is to analyse my players first and, after that, I will see what I am going to do.

“Sometimes, yes, we want to do things, but there are certain things that we cannot control.

“We are not the only club. There are many things. I’m going to tell you, I like you, I want you as a number six, but maybe we’re going to be in competition with other clubs and so on.”

Wrexham’s James McClean banned over Swansea City ‘incident’

James McClean has been banned for three matches following an incident during Wrexham’s defeat at Swansea City last Friday.

Videos circulated on social media after the game appearing to show McClean flicking a boot towards Ronald when the Swansea winger was lying on the pitch.

The Football Association (FA) says McClean, 36, has admitted a charge of violent conduct.

“The player’s behaviour around the 94th minute wasn’t seen by the match officials at the time, but it was caught on video, and the FA alleged that it constitutes violent conduct,” an FA statement said.

“James McClean subsequently admitted the charge against him and accepted the standard penalty for violent conduct.”

McClean has started Wrexham’s past seven matches with New Zealand international left-back Liberato Cacace missing through injury.

Former Republic of Ireland international McClean has made 18 appearances this season, but will now miss Wrexham’s upcoming games against Sheffield United, Preston North End and Blackburn Rovers.

  • Joelle Murray takes over as Hibernian head coach

Joelle Murray takes over as Hibernian head coach

New Hibernian women head coach Joelle Murray says she sought counsel from men’s manager David Gray on the transition from assistant to the top job.

The 39-year-old, who replaces Celtic-bound Grant Scott, is following the same path as Gray, from player to captain, from first team coach to head coach.

“It’s been fantastic to draw on his experience,” said Murray.

“There’s a lot of experienced people in the building and everyone has popped their head in to offer their congratulations.”

Murray said the last 48 hours had been an “emotional rollercoaster”, revealing: “It’s a role I’ve had aspirations for ever since I started my coaching badges.”

She turned to coaching when ending a 21-year playing career at the club in 2024, having featured in more than 500 games.

Across those two decades she won two league titles and lifted 12 cups.

The first woman to sign a pro contract at Easter Road, Murray also earned 48 Scotland caps.

Murray has agreed a three-and-a-half year contract and says having the backing of sporting director Malky Mckay and the club’s owners, the Gordon family, “means everything” to her, explaining that such support is crucial in combating “self doubt” and “imposter syndrome.”

Hibs sit fifth in the SWPL after their surprise title victory last season and Murray says she does “not want to reinvent the wheel”, but instead make “small changes” over the rest of the campaign.

On the announcement of Murray’s internal promotion, Mackay added: “We are constantly planning for the future, and, following Grant Scott’s departure, there was no doubt in our minds that Joelle was ready to step up.

“She already has good relationships with the current playing squad, staff, knows the Scottish women’s game inside out, and lives and breathes Hibernian FC.”

Real Madrid forward Endrick to join Lyon on loan

Real Madrid and Brazil forward Endrick has agreed to join French side Lyon on loan until the end of the season.

The highly-rated 19-year-old signed for the Spanish giants in the summer of 2024 from Palmeiras after winning back-to-back Brazilian league titles.

However, after making 37 appearances in the 2024-25 campaign he has seen his opportunities limited at the Bernabeu this term under Xabi Alonso, featuring on just three occasions.

The teenager has scored three goals in 14 matches for Brazil but his last international cap came in March during a 4-1 World Cup qualifying defeat against Argentina in Buenos Aires.

Endrick will be hoping that his switch to Ligue 1 allows him to impress and force his way back into the Brazil squad in time for next summer’s World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Nicaragua reiterates solidarity with Venezuela before of US

In an official statement, the Government of Reconciliation and National Unity of Nicaragua indicated that it had received with deep appreciation a letter outlining the numerous threats and hostile actions faced by the Venezuelan people, as well as Our America as a whole.

The Nicaraguan Executive recognized the commitment to peace of the Bolivarian Government of Venezuela and reiterated the unwavering solidarity of the people of Augusto Cesar Sandino with the “heroic and unyielding people of (Simon) Bolivar and (Hugo) Chavez.”

The statement noted that the nation is constantly fighting against the destabilizing attempts of imperialism and its allies, who are opposed to peace, international law, and respect for the sovereignty of free peoples.

Nicaragua also shared the condemnation of acts of aggression, threats, or the use of force against Venezuela’s territorial integrity, as well as actions described as piracy, looting, and theft of the South American country’s natural resources.

The statement also denounced extrajudicial killings considered illegal, even under U.S. law, and demanded an immediate end to all aggression that violates the Charter of the United Nations and international law.

“We are living through extraordinarily difficult times, but we are certain that Venezuela is victorious and will prevail, that our people are victorious and will prevail, because we love peace and walk hand in hand with our Almighty God, defending the rights, progress, and victories achieved,” the text emphasizes.

Mexico to state position on Venezuela at Security Council Meeting

“Hector Vasconcelos, our ambassador (to the United Nations), will participate. I was speaking with Roberto Velasco, who is now in charge of Foreign Affairs, and he will present a very firm statement of what Mexico always thinks,” the president affirmed.

In a context marked by Washington’s military threats against Caracas, the head of the Executive Branch insisted on her nation’s foreign policy, governed by principles such as non-intervention in states, non-interference, and the peaceful resolution of conflicts.

“That will always be our position. We have stated it very forcefully and we will always defend it,” she emphasized. When asked about the announcements made yesterday by US President Donald Trump regarding the construction of a battery of battleships, Sheinbaum recalled the proposal she made in November 2024 at the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Brazil.

“We made a proposal that we always defend: if one percent of what is spent on armaments worldwide were dedicated to a program like Sembrando Vida (Sowing Life), we would have more than six million participants in the program. We will always defend peace,” she said.

Venezuelan President Nicolámas Maduro urged his counterparts from Latin American and Caribbean nations, as well as from the 194 UN member states, to join forces to contain the US military and piracy threat.
