Raheem Sterling: Feyenoord move training to Belgium to accommodate England forward

Feyenoord will train in Belgium this week instead of their home in Rotterdam so signing Raheem Sterling can work with his new team-mates.

England forward Sterling joined Feyenoord last week after leaving Chelsea by mutual consent but he can not train or play in the Netherlands until he is granted a work permit.

Manager Robin van Persie says he has moved his side’s training to Tubize – which is around 137km from Rotterdam – to allow the 31-year-old to gel with his new team-mates as quickly as possible.

“One of the reasons is that Sterling can train with the team,” said Van Persie.

“But we can also work on our team culture there. It’s for Raheem and for those processes that we’re going to do this.”

Feyenoord plan to return to Rotterdam after Wednesday’s training session and are hoping Sterling’s work permit is granted in time for their home match against Telstar on Sunday.

Sterling, who has also played for Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal, spent time discussing numerous options after leaving Chelsea.

Sources told BBC Sport that around 18 clubs in England and across Europe expressed an interest in him, before he decided to join Feyenoord.

The 16-time Dutch champions are second in the Eredivisie table, 14 points behind league leaders PSV.

Sterling has scored 20 goals in 82 international appearances for England but has not played for the Three Lions since 2022.

A pre-investigative commission will begin work on Wednesday in Uruguay’s Senate to examine the contract with Spanish shipbuilder Cardama for two ocean patrol vessels (OPVs), recently cancelled by President Yamandú Orsi’s government.

The move was introduced on Tuesday by governing Broad Front (Frente Amplio) senator Sebastián Sabini, who requested a full parliamentary investigation “to clarify all the facts and procedures” linked to the deal. The Senate presidency approved the creation of a pre-investigative panel made up of two lawmakers from the ruling coalition and one from the opposition.

The panel has 48 hours to issue its recommendation on whether a formal investigative commission should be set up. Work is due to start on Wednesday morning.

The contract was signed on 15 December 2023 by the Defence Ministry under former president Luis Lacalle Pou’s administration. It covered the purchase of two OPVs from Cardama for US$ 92 million. In Sabini’s filing, lawmakers cite “difficulties from the outset” in securing the guarantees required by Defence and reference later assessments concluding there were “serious breaches” in the execution of the work.

Orsi’s government first announced on 22 October it would seek to terminate the contract after identifying alleged irregularities tied to the guarantees, including confirmation that EuroCommerce —the entity meant to provide the backing— was in liquidation. Orsi said at the time there were signs of “a scam or fraud against the Uruguayan state,” and the government filed a criminal complaint that was later expanded.

On 28 October, Orsi added that the previous administration had been “clearly” deceived in the Cardama case. On 13 February, he confirmed the cancellation and announced steps to “recover state assets” while moving to procure the patrol vessels through a new process.

Questions flagged for parliamentary scrutiny include why the government opted for a direct purchase, who introduced Cardama to the Defence Ministry after a competitive procedure was dropped, and why no insurance adviser was hired or Central Bank consultations sought regarding the guarantees, according to the Senate submission.

  • Argentina union announces general strike ahead of Milei’s labor reform

Argentina union announces general strike ahead of Milei’s labor reform

Buenos Aires, Argentina – Argentina’s largest union umbrella organization, the General Confederation of Labor (CGT), yesterday announced it would stage a 24-hour general strike in response to a planned national labor reform.

The CGT said it will initiate the strike when the lower house begins to debate the sweeping labor law championed by right-wing President Javier Milei, expected to happen on Thursday, February 19.

The bill, which received upper house approval last Thursday, aims to make the country’s labor force more flexible by reducing workers’ right to strike, capping severance pay, and extending the working day, measures that have drawn condemnation from unions.

While the CGT did not declare an official date for the strike, several syndicates announced plans to strike and protest this Thursday.

“Resignation does not make history. This Thursday, we must bring all of Argentina to a standstill!” wrote Rodolfo Aguiar, head of the State Workers Association, a powerful union.

Argentine transport syndicates also said they would adhere to the strike, threatening to paralyze transport in Buenos Aires on Thursday.

Milei argues the labor reforms are needed to resurrect Argentina’s long stagnant economy and says they will benefit business owners and also help end informal work. An estimated 40% of Argentines are employed in the informal sector.

But the government has faced staunch opposition from both leftist parties and unions. They say the bill will deal a blow to workers’ rights, forcing them to work longer hours with fewer benefits.

Milei’s ‘La Libertad Avanza’ or ‘Freedom Advances’ party was forced to amend the bill to pass it through the senate last week. Notably, the government watered down measures specifically targeting unions, including ditching their proposal to axe mandatory union contributions by workers.

But the CGT remains opposed to the bill over its plans to slash severance packages, extend the maximum working day from eight to twelve hours, permit payment in kind (goods and services), and restrict the right to strike.

Milei defended the reforms in a post on X Monday, writing: “Holiday? What’s that? We work every day. The only way to get ahead is through capitalism, saving, and hard work.”

In Buenos Aires, workers and business owners are divided on the reform.

Luis Alberto García, a Venezuelan Uber driver who fled to Argentina seven years ago, believes the reform will help avoid a similar inflationary crisis that drove him from his home country.

“We’ve seen this happen before in Venezuela. Socialism drove the country into the ground. I think the reform will help improve the economy for everyone,” García told Argentina Reports

But others say the problem is not labor regulation, but inflation.

“If the currency is at rock bottom, how can we change the employment situation? First, we need to control prices,” said Gonzalo Cruz, a shop owner in La Boca.

He added that he believes it is impossible to reform the economy without people changing their behavior, blaming the country’s chronic crisis on dishonesty.

“The law doesn’t matter if there is no morality, if workers lie to their bosses and the bosses exploit their workers,” added Cruz.

After decades of failed reforms, it may take more than a change in the law to fix Argentina’s economy.

Peru’s Congress ousts interim President José Jerí

The political trigger was a leaked video showing Jerí entering a closed Chinese restaurant in Lima at night, his face partially covered, to meet Zhihua Yang, a businessman with commercial interests

Peru’s Congress voted on Tuesday to remove interim President José Jerí, just four months after he took office, deepening political uncertainty only weeks before the April 12 general election.

Lawmakers backed the motion by 75 votes to 24, with three abstentions, according to the official count aired during the session.

Jerí, a 39-year-old lawyer linked to the Somos Perú bloc, became president in October 2025 after Dina Boluarte was forced out. His downfall was driven by a scandal dubbed “Chifagate,” after footage and reporting pointed to unrecorded meetings with Chinese businessmen inside and outside the presidential palace.

Ahead of the debate, Jerí denied any wrongdoing and described the affair as procedural “mistakes.” In recent weeks, he said the meetings were tied to cultural arrangements, but Congress and prosecutors moved to scrutinize the contacts as a possible corruption and influence-peddling case.

The political trigger was a leaked video showing Jerí entering a closed Chinese restaurant in Lima at night, his face partially covered, to meet Zhihua Yang, a businessman with commercial interests and ties to government contracting. Parliamentary inquiries also highlighted Ji Wu Xiaodong, another Chinese national under investigation for alleged illegal logging, who—according to media reports and official inquiries—visited the palace despite court-imposed restrictions.

The floor debate unfolded amid election-season maneuvering by blocs seeking leverage ahead of the vote. During the session, lawmaker Hamlet Echeverría, one of the motion’s sponsors, accused Jerí of wielding power “clandestinely” and said Congress was not weighing “mistakes, but alleged crimes,” according to remarks cited in local coverage.

With Jerí removed, the succession now shifts back to Congress: the head of the legislature is expected to assume the presidency until July 28, when the elected winner is due to be sworn in. However, current congressional leader Fernando Rospigliosi declined to take the post, forcing lawmakers to pick an alternative caretaker in the coming hours.
