A wave of powerful explosions shook Caracas early Wednesday, signaling the most serious escalation yet in the standoff between the United States and Venezuela. Residents reported repeated blasts, aircraft flying overhead and widespread power outages, while images circulating on social media showed fires and thick plumes of smoke rising from strategic areas of the capital.

According to preliminary reports and independently reviewed footage, the strikes appear to have hit key military installations, including Fuerte Tiuna, Venezuela’s main military complex. Additional impacts were reported at other security facilities in Caracas and nearby cities, though the full scope of the operation has not been officially confirmed.

Attacks have also been reported against La Carlota air base and other military sites in Caracas, including the Cuartel de la Montaña—where Hugo Chávez’s remains are kept—as well as targets in Maracay and La Guaira, and Higuerote airport along the central coast. Social media footage shows helicopters operating over the city.

    Venezuelan government statement

Two and a half hours after the first explosions, state television VTV read an official statement announcing the activation of a state of emergency due to external commotion, a measure the government said had been prepared since October. The statement called for “armed struggle” in response to U.S. aggression.

“The entire country must mobilize to defeat this imperialist aggression,” the broadcast said.

The U.S. administration has not issued public comments so far. However, CBS journalist Jennifer Jacobs reported that White House officials are aware of the unfolding events in Venezuela.

The developments follow four months of escalating tensions between Washington and Caracas. President Donald Trump had repeatedly threatened military action, first citing counter-narcotics operations and later arguing for control over Venezuela’s oil sector, which he claims was unlawfully taken from U.S. companies.

Last week, Trump said a first ground strike had already taken place against a dock used by drug traffickers in December. U.S. media placed the incident in La Guajira, near the Colombia border—an account also shared by Colombian President Gustavo Petro.

Social media claims of operations over military bases

On X, Agustín Antonetti, a journalist with a history of commentary on Latin American affairs, shared video clips that he claims show the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR) of the US Army on a mission near Fuerte Tiuna, suggesting a possible target linked to senior Venezuelan officials. (Post at 3:28 a.m., 3 Jan 2026).

There is no independent confirmation of the SOAR unit’s presence or the authenticity of the footage, though the content has been widely shared.

U.S. issues NOTAM restricting Venezuelan airspace

United States aviation authorities issued a NOTAM (Notice to Air Missions) prohibiting U.S. civil aircraft from operating at all altitudes within the Maiquetía FIR — Venezuelan airspace covering much of the country. Such notices are typically issued when there are significant safety risks, and have already led to flight cancellations and reroutes by international carriers.

    Explosions documented in Caracas

International reporting has noted that on 3 January 2026, multiple explosions were heard in Venezuela’s capital during the early morning, along with reports of low helicopters and aircraft, and outages across parts of Caracas. The incidents occur amidst ongoing tension with the United States, but official confirmation from Venezuelan or US authorities is still pending.

    Verification warning

Observers familiar with the flow of information inside Venezuela have cautioned about rapid spread of unverified videos and claims. Given longstanding restrictions on social media and news outlets within the country, analysts recommend careful verification with established international agencies before conclusions can be drawn.

The strikes come after four months of mounting tensions, repeated warnings from President Donald Trump about possible military action, and a significant U.S. military buildup in the Caribbean. Trump had said last week that Washington had already carried out limited ground operations against drug-trafficking targets linked to Venezuela.

  • More than 3,000 Brazilians repatriated or deported in 2025

More than 3,000 Brazilians repatriated or deported in 2025

Since the beginning of 2025, the “Here is Brazil” program has carried out 37 operations, guaranteeing the return of that number of vulnerable Brazilian nationals, mostly from the United States.

This represents almost double the 1,600 repatriations of 2024.

Such mass deportations were one of the campaign promises of US President Donald Trump, with repercussions also for Brazilians, who had already witnessed the increase in these measures.

In the case of the latest repatriation, after initial reception at the international airport of Belo Horizonte, capital of the state of Minas Gerais (southeast), part of the group was transferred to a hotel with a special assistance structure.

There they received food, hygiene kits, psychosocial support, medical and psychological assistance, as well as guidance and help for their journey to their cities of origin.

According to the MDCH, those who already had family in the area or decided to travel directly were also received at the airport terminal itself.

  • Premier League academy host family system explained and Theo Walcott’s Gareth Bale stories

Premier League academy host family system explained and Theo Walcott’s Gareth Bale stories

Some clubs eschew the host family approach in favour of a boarding system, in which players live together in dormitories on club property, the most famous being Barcelona’s La Masia.

“There are strengths and weaknesses to both models,” says Sam Bayford, Brentford‘s academy head of safeguarding.

“The reason we went with our model is that we want to give the players a real break, a geographical and psychological separation rather than living with and sleeping next to the lads they’ve been training with all day.”

Adolescence is a key time for personal, physical and technical development in young footballers – done right, the management of an academy player’s living situation can propel them forwards.

From age 15 Theo Walcott spent two years living at Darwin Lodge, a boarding house run by Southampton until 2010, which the former England international credits with underpinning his successful career.

Walcott lived at the Lodge alongside players like Adam Lallana, Nathan Dyer, and Leon Best, and shared a bedroom with five-time Champions League winner Gareth Bale.

“Being around the other players all the time I found really hard at the start,” the former Arsenal winger tells BBC Sport. “But the environment was built to be like you were in a proper home.

“When you have a lot of good players in the same age group around each other constantly every day, you can feed off each other, always willing to do well together.

“People would act silly sometimes. You would come home and the lights would all be off and you’d know you were in trouble because Gareth and a lot of the other players would be waiting with their underpants on their head and batter you with pillows! You’d have to dart to your room but luckily I was quick.

“Put us all together in a room even now, it’s like we saw each other yesterday.”

Early Saturday morning, several users on the platform X reported explosions and possible military strikes in Caracas and near strategic installations.

Journalist Orlando Avendaño, active on X covering crisis events in Latin America, listed several “verified bombed targets in Venezuela” as of 03:53 a.m. local time:

    – Fuerte Tiuna military base (Caracas).

    – La Carlota Airport.

    – El Volcán area (north Caracas).

    – Officer School in La Guaira.

These claims come as independent international sources have reported at least seven explosions heard across Caracas early Saturday, accompanied by reports of low-flying aircraft and power outages in parts of the city amid heightened tensions with the United States.

Caracas eyewitness reports and caution on misinformation

Other users, including Luis Carlos, who covers Venezuelan developments online, described hearing explosions around La Carlota and Fuerte Tiuna and other locations, emphasizing the difficulty of verification due to media restrictions inside Venezuela.

He urged social media users to circulate only verified content while protecting sources’ identities due to platform blocks that limit real-time reporting from within the country.

Spain rejects Israel’s intention to expel NGOs

In a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry, the Spanish government condemned the regulations for registering humanitarian NGOs operating in the occupied Palestinian territory, only to then revoke their licenses, expel them, and prevent them from carrying out their work.

With these measures, which have affected well-known Spanish and international NGOs, Israel is thus limiting their work and the ability of other actors to address the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and meet the most basic needs of the Palestinian population, the statement said.

“This decision comes on top of the recent Knesset approval of the law that mandates cutting off the electricity and water supply to UNRWA facilities in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory, in addition to removing its immunities and privileges,” it noted.

Elsewhere in the statement, the Spanish government reiterated its “deepest concern about the severe impact these decisions will have on the already catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza and the Occupied Palestinian Territory.”

At the same time, it urged Israel to reverse “these unacceptable decisions that prevent essential humanitarian actors from working to save lives and address the urgent basic needs of the Palestinian civilian population and refugees in Gaza, the West Bank, and throughout the Middle East region.”

  • Harvey Elliott: Aston Villa ‘not convinced’ two months ago to sign on-loan forward permanently

Harvey Elliott: Aston Villa ‘not convinced’ two months ago to sign on-loan forward permanently

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery says the club were “not convinced” two months ago to sign Harvey Elliott permanently.

The forward arrived from Liverpool in September on a season-long loan, with an obligation to buy for £35m based on him playing 10 Premier League games for the Midlands club.

BBC Sport understands that Major League Soccer side Charlotte FC, who are coached by former Villa manager Dean Smith, are interested in Elliott, but the 22-year-old is not keen on moving to America.

Elliott has only featured five times under Emery, with his last appearance coming as a late substitute against Feyenoord in the Europa League on 2 October.

“The problem we have with Harvey is that this year he is on loan, and in case he plays matches we must buy him,” said Emery.

“We decided two months ago that we are not convinced to sign him, spending the money we would need to sign him.

“This is the only issue. He is training every day, always every day with very good behaviour and to help us in training sessions.

  • Wilfried Nancy: Celtic boss pleads for time after faltering start as Old Firm test awaits

Wilfried Nancy: Celtic boss pleads for time after faltering start as Old Firm test awaits

“As you know, I need time,” he said. “Give me time and you’re going to see what I do. You can already see what I did before because I didn’t start yesterday.

“I’m going to be a liar if I say, ‘everything is happy, everything is good’. No, it’s not the case, but I knew that before.

“That’s why I’m calm during all the questions you ask me. I’m not pleased to hear people don’t like me, but they have the right to say it because in terms of results, this is not what we want.

“Tomorrow is a big game. But the context is that I’ve only had 13 training sessions with my team. Usually we have four weeks of pre-season.

“It’s totally normal that you guys kill me. I’m fine with that because I know where I want to go. Judge me in a few weeks or months. If you want to judge me now, you can do it. I didn’t have the results we wanted – it’s a fact, I cannot deny that.”

Nancy says he will “die” to achieve his goals at Celtic and believes results under him have not reflected performances.

“It’s totally normal my players need a bit of time and are confused at certain moments,” he explained.

“It’s a process. I don’t like the word ‘process’ because people think I am going to hide behind ‘process’, but it’s true.

“Judge me, no problem, but have a look at the games since I have been here and analyse if we should have won or lost. Do it.

“I am a clear guy. For the moment, I cannot talk because results are not good enough. I shut my mouth and I take it, but I know where we are going. After that, if it’s going to work or not, I don’t know. We are going to do everything to do it and I am here for that.

“Yes, I want to win every game. Yes, I want to win titles. I want to create a legacy here. I am going to die for this club, for sure.”
