    China announces beef import quotas

“I think it’s positive news” for Uruguay, Fratti said

Beginning in 2026, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce will implement a three-year “protective measure” consisting of a 55% tariff on beef imports exceeding specific quotas. The initiative was found to hit the United States, Brazil, and Australia. However, it would leave Uruguay unharmed and prevent any Argentine expansion.

Following an investigation that blamed skyrocketing imports for hurting local producers, Beijing is now capping duty-free imports. Hence, anything above each exporter’s annual quota will face the 55% surcharge. Brazil was allowed to ship up to 1,100,000 tons, Argentina 511,000 tons, Uruguay 324,000 tons, Australia 200,000 tons, and the United States 164,000 tons.

China claims these measures are intended to “temporarily help the domestic industry overcome difficulties” caused by an oversupply of foreign meat.

In this scenario, Uruguay’s Agriculture and Livestock Minister Alfredo Fratti noted that his country’s cap was significantly higher than its actual export history, providing ample room for growth. “In 2025, we did not even reach 200,000 tons,” Fratti explained. “We have never exported that entire amount, even in record years.”

Because Uruguay is unlikely to hit its limit, it will continue to pay the standard 12.5% tariff, while competitors like Brazil and Argentina risk triggering the extra charge if they attempt to maintain their current volumes.

“Not only is it not serious, I think it’s positive news,” Fratti said. “It is likely that, if other countries in the region decrease [their exports] and China continues to need meat, we will be able to increase and meet this authorized quota.”

In the case of Brazil, the country would need to cut nearly 25% of its shipments to stay within the limit, while in Buenos Aires, the Argentine Beef Promotion Institute (Ipcva) reported that Argentina exported 453,860 tons to China through November 2025. While the new 511,000-ton quota covers current levels, it effectively “hard-caps” any future expansion.

Additionally, Beijing has suspended parts of the Australia-China Free Trade Agreement specifically related to beef, thus dealing a major blow to Canberra.

Fratti attributed this favorable scenario to Uruguay’s “political relationship” and its reputation for “commercial seriousness.” He revealed that the Chinese Ambassador visited him personally days before the announcement to guarantee that Uruguay would not be harmed.

New State of Emergency declared in Ecuador after mass killing

A violent mass shooting in the Ecuadorean port city of Manta left at least six people dead and a dozen wounded on New Year’s Eve, as President Daniel Noboa declared a fresh 60-day State of Emergency across nine provinces.

The New Year’s Eve massacre occurred around 11 pm local time in the Nueva Esperanza neighborhood of Manta. According to police reports, gunmen stormed a gathering outside a residence and opened fire indiscriminately on a group of people, killing one child, one woman, and four men between the ages of 26 and 45.

The Manta district —which includes the cantons of Montecristi and Jaramijó— closed 2025 with a record-breaking 500 homicides, for a nationwide total of 9,000 in 2025.

In response to the surge in high-intensity violence, President Noboa signed a decree on Wednesday night establishing a new state of emergency for nine provinces and three cantons. The measure, which went into effect on Thursday, suspends the right to inviolability of domicile and correspondence in Guayas, Manabí, Santa Elena, Los Ríos, El Oro, Esmeraldas, Pichincha (including the capital, Quito), Santo Domingo, and the cantons of La Maná, Las Naves, and Echeandía.

The presidency cited military reports warning of a deliberate strategy of intimidation by powerful criminal syndicates, specifically naming Los Lobos, Choneros, and Tiguerones.

According to the National Police, these groups are responsible for a wave of bombings, targeted assassinations of public officials, and multiple homicides. Between November 1 and December 23, 2025, alone, 1,232 people were murdered in the affected provinces.

The 60-day decree is intended to allow the Armed Forces to execute a “complete operational cycle” to dismantle these criminal structures and restore basic security conditions. This latest move continues the “internal armed conflict” status first declared by the Noboa administration in January 2024.

The Mariscal Sucre International (Quito) and José Joaquín de Olmedo (Guayaquil) airports remain fully operational. Travelers are allowed to move to and from airports during curfew hours, provided they show their passports and flight reservation papers.

Brennan Johnson set to be in Crystal Palace’s squad to face Newcastle after Tottenham exit

Brennan Johnson is set to be included in Crystal Palace‘s squad to face Newcastle on Sunday after finalising a club record £35m move from Tottenham.

Palace are expected to announce the signing of the Wales forward inside the next 24 hours after Johnson completed the formalities of his move across London on Friday.

The 24-year-old attracted interest from Bournemouth, with the Cherries keen to sign a replacement for Manchester City target Antoine Semenyo.

But, after talks with Palace boss Oliver Glasner on Thursday, Johnson was persuaded to move to Selhurst Park.

Johnson’s arrival will break the club’s record transfer fee paid, eclipsing the £27m the Eagles paid for Liverpool striker Christian Benteke in 2016.

The forward joined Spurs in a £47.5m deal from Nottingham Forest in 2023 and scored the winner as the club ended their 17-year wait for silverware with Europa League success last season.

But Johnson’s minutes have been limited under Spurs manager Thomas Frank this term, with the Wales international scoring four goals in 22 appearances.

News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Friday Jan. 2, 2026: Caribbean immigrants from the Caribbean Community, (CARICOM), are among those listed on the newly released U.S. Department of Homeland Security “Worst of the Worst,” (WOW) list. The list features non-U.S. citizens arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in 2025 following prior criminal convictions.

In total, some 320 CARICOM nationals appear on the list, with Jamaicans accounting for the largest share at 129, followed by Haitians at 103.

Arrests were overwhelmingly concentrated in Florida, followed by New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, mirroring major Caribbean Diaspora population centers. The most common conviction patterns involved weapons offenses, drug trafficking, violent crimes such as robbery and assault, and fraud-related charges, including identity theft.

If nationals from the Spanish-speaking Caribbean were included, the total would rise sharply to 1,797 individuals. Cubans account for the largest group at 1,152, while nationals from the Dominican Republic total 327, according to DHS records.

New York’s first-ever Muslim Mayor sworn in

Mamdani vowed to set a global example of how a progressive, left-wing administration can effectively govern
Mamdani vowed to set a global example of how a progressive, left-wing administration can effectively govern

Zohran Mamdani was inaugurated as the 112th mayor of New York City on Thursday, marking a historic shift in the city’s political landscape. The 34-year-old former State Assemblyman, an avowed democratic socialist, became the first Muslim to lead the nation’s most populous city.

Surrounded by his family, Mamdani took the oath of office administered by New York Attorney General Letitia James, just after midnight in a private, highly symbolic ceremony at the decommissioned Old City Hall subway station. Mamdani was sworn in using a Quran. The new Mayor’s office stated the subterranean location was chosen to demonstrate solidarity with the “working people who keep our city running every day.”

Following the ceremony, Mamdani returned to City Hall at midday for a public inauguration before thousands of supporters. US Senator Bernie Sanders, a key political mentor, administered the oath for a second time.

In a defiant inaugural address, Mamdani rejected calls to moderate his platform, which includes ambitious plans for free public transit, universal childcare, and a citywide rent freeze.

“I was elected as a democratic socialist, and I will govern as a democratic socialist,” Mamdani told the crowd. “I will not abandon my principles for fear of being deemed radical.”

Mamdani’s speech focused heavily on the city’s affordability crisis. He promised to “resurrect the legacy” of a government that works for those “who operate our subways and rake our parks,” and fund social programs by increasing taxes on the “ultra-wealthy few” and large corporations, using the power of City Hall to lower the cost of living.

The Mayor also pledged to move forward with a US$10 billion agenda featuring universal childcare and the elimination of bus fares. To achieve his goals, Mamdani needs cooperation from the state legislature and Governor Kathy Hochul.

In a message to those who view his administration with “distrust or disdain,” he promised to rule for all New Yorkers, regardless of political affiliation, while vowing to set a global example of how a progressive, left-wing administration can effectively govern.
