Diogo Jota’s wife thanks Liverpool fans for the ‘love’

The widow of footballer Diogo Jota has thanked Liverpool fans for their “love” in “this incredibly difficult time” after he died in a car crash.

Rute Cardoso posted a message on Instagram after two of the couple’s three children led tributes before Liverpool’s game against Wolves.

His sons Dinis and Duarte joined the matchday mascots on the Anfield pitch before the Premier League game on Saturday. Jota played for both clubs.

The Portugal forward, 28, was killed in a car crash in Spain in July, alongside his 25-year-old brother Andre Silva.

His Lamborghini suffered a tyre blow-out, crashing and catching fire in Cernadilla in the Zamora province of Spain.

His widow said in an Instagram message: “From the bottom of my heart, thank you to the club and to all the fans for the love, respect and support shown during this incredibly difficult time.

“Your messages and gestures have meant more than words can express.”

Jota’s sons led the Liverpool team out of the tunnel before Saturday’s Premier League game, and walked out ahead of captain Virgil van Dijk.

A banner which read: “Diogo Jota, forever in our hearts” was held aloft in the Kop stand before kick-off.

Jota joined Wolves on an initial season-long loan deal from Atletico Madrid in 2017 and went on to score 44 goals in 131 appearances.

He scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for Liverpool, helping them win the FA Cup and EFL Cup in 2022 and the Premier League title last season.

The Merseyside club retired Jota’s number 20 shirt following his death.

  • Virgil van Dijk says Liverpool’s set-piece problems are a ‘killer’

Virgil van Dijk says Liverpool’s set-piece problems are a ‘killer’

“It’s something we have to improve. I would say at least 75% of the time or even more, it’s not even about the first contact. It’s the second phase that is the killer.

“Is it a mental thing? I hope not. If that’s in your head then it’s an issue. Personally, it’s not in my head.”

Excluding penalties, Liverpool have only scored three goals from set-pieces in the league. Their difference of minus nine is their worst in a Premier League season.

“We have defended so many set-pieces very well. But we’ve conceded too many goals like that and it hurts. We have to improve that. Training is the only way to get better at it,” Van Dijk added.

“It’s not been good enough. We all realise that. We have spoken about it. We need to turn it around. That’s why we work on it almost every training session.”

Liverpool manager Slot said: “Unfortunately we’re maybe the only team that hardly ever scores from a set-piece and, even worse, we constantly concede.

“But then, I think I said two, three or four weeks ago, we have to make sure that when things go against us – it could be a set-piece, it could be other things – we still need to find a way to win.

“In the last two games we conceded from a set-piece but we were able to win and that hasn’t happened many times this season. That’s progress for me, but it’s obvious there are more things for us to improve and this is definitely one of them.

“I think we have been unlucky in multiple situations in our set-pieces. It is 18 games now and we need to improve.”

Liverpool’s third league win in a row took them up to fourth in the table.

  • Chelsea investigate bottle throw at Aston Villa’s bench in Premier League match

Chelsea investigate bottle throw at Aston Villa’s bench in Premier League match

Chelsea are investigating after a bottle was thrown towards the Aston Villa bench following their 2-1 Premier League defeat at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

After the full-time whistle, an open plastic bottle was directed at Villa’s celebrating bench, splashing staff and players with a liquid that appeared to be water.

One member of staff pointed towards the area from which the bottle came, which seemed to be a section containing both Chelsea fans and staff.

It remains unclear who was responsible. Chelsea have launched an investigation but have not commented officially at this stage.

It is also unclear whether referee Stuart Attwell and his officials saw the incident or whether it will be included in his report. BBC Sport has contacted the Football Association for comment.

Villa substitute Ollie Watkins scored twice to overturn Joao Pedro’s first-half opener for Chelsea.

Unai Emery’s side have now equalled a club record of 11 consecutive wins in all competitions and sit three points behind league leaders Arsenal in third. Chelsea are fifth before Sunday’s games.

Andy Carroll: Former Newcastle, Liverpool and England striker due in court after arrest

Former Newcastle United, Liverpool and England striker Andy Carroll is due to appear in court on Tuesday after he was charged with breaching a non-molestation order.

Carroll, 36, who now plays for National League South side Dagenham and Redbridge, was arrested in April with the alleged offence said to have been committed a month earlier.

The 36-year-old, who has nine caps for England and was signed by Liverpool in 2011 for a then club record fee of £35m, is listed to appear at Chelmsford Magistrates Court.

Essex Police said: “A man has been charged with breaching a non-molestation order. Andrew Carroll, 36, of Epping, was arrested on April 27 and the alleged offences relate to an incident in March. He is due to appear at Chelmsford magistrates’ court on December 30.”

A non-molestation order is a court injunction typically issued to prevent a person from communicating with another and could also stop someone from coming within a certain distance of a specific address or a place of work.

The punishment for breach of a non-molestation order ranges from a fine to up to five years in prison for the most serious of cases.

  • Danny Rohl’s Rangers in race – but ‘brave & bold’ backing needed

Danny Rohl’s Rangers in race – but ‘brave & bold’ backing needed

It may have seemed unfathomable when Russell Martin was being bundled into the back of a car as fans protested at their draw at Falkirk, but Rangers are hanging in.

On that day in early October, Rangers were 11 points off the title pace after the same amount of games. Most alarmingly, they were eighth and closer to the bottom of the table than the top.

Since then, Rangers have been functional, if not sensational. But their long-suffering support will take that right now.

Since Rohl’s arrival, last week’s loss to Hearts was his only one in the league, and only the second domestically after a valiant extra-time defeat in the League Cup semi-final by Celtic.

There’s been a couple of draws in there, but since the former Sheffield Wednesday manager came in, his team are top of the form table, garnering an average 2.3 points per game.

They’ve also kept a clean sheet 60% of the time, a tally only bettered by Motherwell.

Europe has been a different story, but that’s not where Rohl will be judged right now.

“It’s about the next game and the next three points. It’s a long, long way, a long journey and a lot of games to go. It’s about the next challenge we have,” said Rohl after the win over Motherwell.

“We are still in the race but a lot of games to go.

“I think after the Hearts defeat the question was different, today we have this question. I understand but it’s about the next game and the next three points.”
