Will Cole Palmer make England’s World Cup squad?

Palmer’s languid style disguises a pressure-proofed temperament, as proved at Euro 2024.

Upson said: “One of his biggest assets, and this is absolutely not a derogatory remark, is that he doesn’t think. He just does what he does. He’s not going to tighten up.

“We saw the perfect example in the Euro 2024 final. He does it all naturally and that is very powerful in moments of high pressure, which England will endure at some point at the World Cup.

“I don’t know if there are many better than Palmer in that respect.”

Nevin insists no-one should be fooled by Palmer’s perceived casual style.

“There are plenty of different ways to play football,” he says. “Just because the veins in your forehead are not permanently popping out, or you’re not shaking your fist at people for 90 minutes, doesn’t mean you’re not fully engaged. You can still be cool and incredibly competitive.

“He looks like he just cruises along, but look at his numbers, his impact.

“Cole Palmer has got a bit of everything. He’s got brilliant dribbling ability. He’s amazing in tight spaces surrounded by two or three players, creating more space when there doesn’t seem to be any.

“At his very best, I think Palmer’s world class. He would definitely be in my squad if all things are equal, then I’d be very tempted to start him.

“He just needs to put together a two or three-month period at his best, then I can’t imagine Tuchel not taking him.”

The Wayne Rooney Show – Wayne’s Shocking Christmas Dinner & Players Going AWOL

    Available for over a year

It’s a festive special of The Wayne Rooney Show as Wayne, Kelly Somers and Kae Kurd are joined by Sam Allardyce and Dion Dublin for a Christmas catch-up. Wayne reveals his eyebrow-raising Christmas dinner choices and what the big day is really like in the Rooney household, while the panel lifts the lid on how footballers actually spend Christmas.

Big Sam recalls the moment he discovered a West Ham player had gone home for Christmas and wasn’t coming back for the next game, and shares stories from an era when playing on Christmas Day – and drinking afterwards – was all part of the job. Dion explains why some players deliberately stayed out of their manager’s way over the festive period, how he ended up releasing a Christmas album, and why he’s recently popped up on EastEnders.

There are also tales of expensive bottles of wine being demolished by Wayne’s father-in-law, bumping into the entire Liverpool squad in hospital, sunshine mid-season breaks to Dubai (including one Wayne missed), and a debate on whether having just one Premier League game on Boxing Day has ruined a great footballing tradition.

You can watch The Wayne Rooney Show on BBC Sport YouTube, iPlayer, as well as listen on BBC Sounds.

  • Women’s League Cup: Chelsea thrash Liverpool as Arsenal, Man City and Man Utd also reach semis

Women’s League Cup: Chelsea thrash Liverpool as Arsenal, Man City and Man Utd also reach semis

Arsenal beat Crystal Palace 2-0, while Manchester United overcame Tottenham 2-1 to complete the semi-final line-up.

Laia Codina’s looping header put Arsenal in front after 20 minutes, but Renee Slegers’ side were unable to increase their advantage until Stina Blackstenius netted in second-half stoppage time.

Crystal Palace, the only Barclays WSL 2 side left in the competition, played in front of a record crowd of 3,040 at the VBS Community Stadium.

Meanwhile, after a thrilling 3-3 encounter between Manchester United and Tottenham in the WSL last weekend, United emerged victorious this time with a narrow 2-1 win.

Drew Spence opened the scoring for Spurs, but second-half goals from Jess Park and Fridolina Rolfo were enough for Marc Skinner’s side to progress.

Arsenal will host Manchester United in the semis, which will be played over 21 and 22 January.

  • Manchester United: Ruben Amorim says players will not leave in January unless they are replaced

Manchester United: Ruben Amorim says players will not leave in January unless they are replaced

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim is not willing to let any players leave in the January transfer window unless replacements come in.

Kobbie Mainoo and Joshua Zirkzee are both keen for chances to play more regularly over the second half of the season. Mainoo still wants to go out on loan, while Zirkzee has been linked with a return to Italy.

However, even when his squad is bolstered in the middle of next month by the return to fitness of skipper Bruno Fernandes and Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui returning from the Africa Cup of Nations, Amorim does not believe there are enough players in his squad to cope with a reduction in numbers.

“It’s going to be hard for someone to leave the club if we don’t get a substitution,” he said.

“We are short. Even with the full squad we are short for something that can happen.

“We are a club with a big responsibility. We are dealing with all these issues and in [the media’s] heads, in my head, in everybody’s head, we need to win every game. It doesn’t matter. There are no excuses.”

Amorim will be without seven senior players for the Boxing Day match against Newcastle.

Mainoo is still sidelined with a calf problem, while defenders Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire also miss out.

Amorim has already said it is possible United may sign someone in January, although that will not be Bournemouth‘s Antoine Semenyo, who is set to join Manchester City instead.

In theory, an upgrade in midfield as a replacement for Zirzkee or Mainoo may improve United as they chase a European place over the second half of the season.

Financially though, losing Mainoo may not make much sense given whoever came in would be on three or four times the 20-year-old’s current salary.

Unless Mainoo returns quickly, 18-year-old England youth international Jack Fletcher will be providing the midfield competition for Casemiro, Mason Mount and Manuel Ugarte over the Christmas and New Year period.

  • Newcastle stadium plans ‘in limbo’ – Eddie Howe

Newcastle stadium plans ‘in limbo’ – Eddie Howe

St James’ was once the second-biggest club stadium in the country, behind Old Trafford, but Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, West Ham United, Arsenal, Manchester City and Everton have all since leapfrogged Newcastle‘s 52,335-seater ground in terms of capacity.

In that time, a huge revenue gap has opened up between the established order and Newcastle, with Manchester United generating £87m more in match-day income and £219.3m more in commercial income in 2023-24.

Newcastle‘s training ground has been modernised in recent years, including hydrotherapy and plunge pools, a new canteen, a players’ lounge and bigger dressing rooms – but it remains some way off the best in the country.

Howe was keen to stress that the “ambition is there from everyone to make that happen”.

But the Newcastle head coach said there needs to be a “bit of patience” with the club’s infrastructure plans to “make sure it’s the right solution for everybody”.

He added: “If there is extra time taken to make the right decisions so the stadium project is correct, and it’s the right one for Newcastle for how ever many years the club are there, then take the extra time.

“It’s the same with the training ground. You need the right site and designs. I would rather it was correct than rushed.

“I know that there’s a 99.9% chance that I’m not going to see either in my position, but I’m still passionate about making sure it’s there for the future generations of Newcastle, whether that’s supporters or players.”
