  • Wilfried Nancy: Analysing new Celtic manager’s tactics

Wilfried Nancy: Analysing new Celtic manager’s tactics

Analysing Nancy’s attacking tactics should give hope to Celtic fans – even if examples of them working as he would hope have not been common in his early days in Glasgow.

Celtic have improved in their past two games – creating a huge number of clear goalscoring chances in the defeat at Dundee United and then the home win against Aberdeen.

Against Aberdeen, they had 71% of the ball, 31 shots, an expected goals tally of 4.53, and hit the post four times.

Even against a side reduced to 10 men, those numbers are staggering, and it would be fair to say a mixture of bad luck, the quality of the finishing and excellent saves restricted them to three goals.

What bodes well for Celtic is their attacking performances look to be gradually improving under Nancy.

Fans will need to show patience, however, as developing the relationships that enable these tactics to work takes time.

Nancy encourages freedom for his players to express themselves, which has an upside in the long run but takes longer to bear fruit in the short term.

During his time at Columbus Crew, when asked about structure and freedom in his side, he said: “For me, there is no creativity in structure. Within [our] concepts, players can move freely.”

  • Grant Scott replaces Elena Sadiku as Celtic boss

Grant Scott replaces Elena Sadiku as Celtic boss

Former SWPL title-winning manager Elena Sadiku has left Celtic and has been replaced by Hibernian boss Grant Scott.

Sadiku, 32, was appointed in January 2024 following Fran Alonso’s exit and guided Celtic to their first-ever SWPL title in her opening six months.

However, Scott, who took Hibs to the title last season, will now takeover in Glasgow following Sadiku’s appointment as boss at BK Hacken.

“It is a huge honour to join Celtic and I look forward to carrying on the great work at the club, to push on and bring even more success to Celtic,” he said.

“I’m excited to join at a time when the new Barrowfield Training Centre is giving our women’s team every opportunity to develop, providing the players and those coming through the academy with the best possible environment to train and come to work each day.

“I have experience of bringing success to clubs and ultimately. This is what we will all strive for again, to ensure that Celtic can be at the very top of the women’s game.”

Under Sadiku, Celtic qualified for the Champions League group stages for the very first time and lost narrowly to Chelsea before heavy defeats to Real Madrid.

However, they struggled in the latter stages of the league season and finished a disappointing fourth as they tried to retain their crown, finishing 15 points behind eventual winners Hibs.

Celtic are currently fourth in the SWPL table, seven points behind leaders Glasgow City. Scott leaves Hibs in fifth and six points adrift of his new side.

“Everyone at Celtic would like to thank Elena for her historic contribution during a hugely successful period,” said Celtic chief executive Michael Nicholson.

“We are now pleased to welcome Grant Scott to Celtic as head coach of our women’s team. Grant brings a strong track record in Scottish women’s football, with proven experience of leading competitive teams and delivering success, most recently guiding Hibernian to their first league title in 18 years last season.

“We believe he is the right person to lead an important next phase of women’s football at Celtic.”

Sadiku added: “To the Celtic fans, thank you for your support and always being there when we needed you. Home and away you were with us at every step, and the connection we built means a lot to me.

“Celtic will always be part of my journey, and I wish everyone at the Club every success in the future.”

  • Rhys Bennett: Manchester United defender on father’s suicide

Rhys Bennett: Manchester United defender on father’s suicide

Content warning: This article contains discussion around suicide and mental health.

Rhys Bennett comes bounding into the media room at Manchester United‘s Carrington training ground bristling with energy, as you would expect of a 22-year-old professional footballer.

Tall and confident, lean and physically fit – apart from a knee injury he is trying to recover from so he can complete a loan move to a League One club next month – defender Bennett offers a firm handshake and talks of his developing skill as a DJ.

Captain of United’s last FA Youth Cup-winning team in 2022, Bennett has impressed during a loan stint at Fleetwood.

But he is not talking about that today.

Bennett has serious issues to discuss, which stem from a heartbreaking message he posted on social media on 28 October.

“Broken, devastated, just don’t want to believe it’s real,” he said. “I love you in this life and the next.”

The message was to his father, David, who had taken his own life.

Bennett wants to talk about the pain of those left behind, to encourage conversation and plead with those struggling with their mental health to choose a different path to the one his dad took.

David, along with the rest of his family, gave his time to help Rhys and daughter Megan, who works in mental health care.

“He was very hard working,” says Bennett. “You grow up, especially as a son, and look up to your father. You want to be like him.

“He gave me so much along the years, including my resilience and work ethic. The time him, my mum and family invested in me to fulfil my dream is something I’ll be forever grateful for. They were always there for me, no matter what.

“They don’t realise how much they’re appreciated, and how they affect people. You want to have millions more laughs and cries and whatever it might be. I appreciate everything he’s ever done for me.

“As much as it’s a sad situation and the last chapter of his life wasn’t a good one, you’ve still got to celebrate his life and think about the good times.

“If I could have one more conversation with him it would be to say how grateful I am of him as a person, how much I love him and let him know how much I really appreciate him. You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone.”

Bennett’s reason to talk to BBC Sport is clear. He wants to help. He realises it is quite possible he will never know if an interview has helped a specific individual, but that is not the point.

“I want to talk about the importance of telling people how you feel, how special it is to be living, to be breathing, to be able to eat, to sleep. You’ve got to be grateful for what you’ve got,” he says.

“Someone might be feeling a certain way but hopefully this nudges people and they might just check up on a person and ask are they OK.

“Don’t question yourself – just do it. Let the people you’re close to know that you’re there for them.”

  • Fifa tests new technology for ball out of play and offside

Fifa tests new technology for ball out of play and offside

The Premier League has produced many controversial incidents in recent seasons which this technology could have helped resolve.

Two seasons ago Arsenal were furious when VAR ruled Joe Willock had kept the ball in play before Anthony Gordon scored the only goal of the game for Newcastle. The VAR did not have the necessary camera angle to prove the ball was out.

There have been several ‘line of sight’ offside incidents this season. When Eberechi Eze scored for Arsenal against Tottenham last month there were claims Leandro Trossard was blocking Guglielmo Vicario’s view of the ball.

The ‘Out of Bounds’ technology uses the same tracking data points and configurations as advanced semi-automated offside.

It is still only in offline testing but was provided with the opportunity to show how reliable it was in Qatar.

Paris St-Germain’s Fabian Ruiz had a goal ruled out through VAR in the Intercontinental Cup final against Flamengo because the ball had gone out.

Fifa also held further trials of immediate offside audio alerts sent to assistants, which debuted at the Club World Cup in the summer.

This is intended to reduce the number of delayed offside flags in obvious situations.

In May, Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi was placed into an induced coma after colliding with a goalpost after play continued from a clear offside.

Fifa hopes quicker notifications of offside will prevent such injuries occuring.
