James Bord: Ex-poker player chosen as Sheffield Wednesday preferred bidder

Former professional poker player James Bord has been chosen as the preferred bidder to take over Sheffield Wednesday, BBC Sport can confirm.

The Owls have been in administration since October, ending 10 years under the ownership of Dejphon Chansiri.

On Wednesday, the troubled Championship club’s administrators announced a deal had been reached with a potential buyer.

London-born Bord started his career working for gambling firms Starlizard and Smartodds before winning $4.3m (£3.18m) on the poker circuit.

He now runs data company Short Circuit Science, which uses artificial intelligence (AI) for sports analytics and was involved in an advisory role to COH Sports after its takeover of Sheffield United in the summer, though he now has no connection to the Owls’ rivals.

Under the banner of Park Bench SFC LLC, Bord also has a stake in Spanish Segunda Division side Cordoba CF and Bulgarian club Septemvri Sofia.

Bord, who is based in Las Vegas, has owned Dunfermline along with partner Evan Sofer for almost a year. He attended his first game in person at the weekend, a 3-2 home loss to Ayr United.

At present it is unclear who is part of Bord’s consortium to buy Wednesday, who are bottom of the Championship table on -9 points due to deductions, or if it will be part of Park Bench SFC LLC.

The Bord bid still has to pass the EFL’s Owners and Directors’ test, which may have some hurdles to overcome due to his past involvement in gambling.

Colombia: Petro declares 30-Day “economic emergency”

    Wednesday, December 24th 2025 – 10:40 UTC

Petro warned that the Constitutional Court repealing his measure would trigger a “serious economic crisis”
Petro warned that the Constitutional Court repealing his measure would trigger a “serious economic crisis”

In a move to bypass Congress on his proposed tax hikes, Colombian President Gustavo Petro declared a 30-day “economic emergency” on Tuesday. The measure, enacted via Decree 1390 of 2025, grants the head of State extraordinary powers for 30 days to circumvent Parliament and impose new taxes on the country’s wealthiest citizens.

The declaration follows the second rejection of Petro’s tax reform by Congress, leaving a deep hole in the 2026 national budget. Petro justified the drastic measure by warning that Colombia faced an “imminent fiscal crisis” and an unsustainable debt burden that could jeopardize essential public services, including healthcare, the judiciary, and national security.

“If there is no emergency, there will be cuts,” Petro stated bluntly. He argued that public investment was being propped up by debt rather than revenue, with the fiscal deficit expected to exceed 7% by the end of 2025.

Petro specified that the emergency powers will be used to target the “super-rich,” a demographic he claims has disproportionately benefited from past economic policies. The leftwing government aims to raise approximately US$4.19 billion through special taxes established by regulatory decrees in the coming days.

The President framed the move as “tax justice,” insisting that those with “large profits” must contribute to preventing a state-wide financial collapse. He has also floated the possibility of lowering salaries for members of Congress as part of the emergency package.

The decree has ignited a firestorm of criticism from the opposition and the business community, who view it as a constitutional overreach, claiming that for an economic emergency to be valid, the law requires an “extraordinary and unforeseen” situation. Absent that case, Petro would be “abusing power” to skip the democratic debate.

Colombia’s Constitutional Court now holds the fate of the decree. If it finds the emergency does not meet the “untimely disruption” threshold, it could strike down the measure. Petro warned that such a rejection would send the country’s risk rating soaring and trigger a “serious economic crisis.”

In this scenario, the National Association of Companies of Colombia (ANDI) and the Colombian Chamber of Construction warned that the move creates “legal uncertainty” that could stifle investment.

Petro also claimed that the Banco de la República’s (Central Bank) interes rates at 9.25% further exacerbated the debt crisis. Finance Minister Germán Ávila added that the lack of funds currently posed a risk to “emerging public security issues” related to organized crime, framing the tax hikes as a necessity for national defense.

  • Latin America 2026 Economic Forecast Why Lithium Nearshoring and Centrist Politics Converge

New supply-chain maps and green-tech hunger are reshaping Latin America in 2026. A J.P. Morgan outlook sees $280 billion in foreign investment, rich lithium and copper reserves, and moderating politics—if governments curb crime, inequality, and fiscal fragility for households, too.

The Promise That Never Quite Cashes Out

In the region’s capitals, ambition and scarcity share the same sidewalk: young workers chasing opportunity, elders counting pesos, and storefronts that open late because the neighborhood isn’t safe at dawn. Latin America is strategically located and resource-rich, yet it has struggled for decades to translate those advantages into sustained prosperity. Investors have learned to admire the potential and fear the pattern—brief booms followed by familiar reversals.

In an analysis credited to J.P. Morgan, that pattern still shows in the headline metric: Latin America’s share of world GDP remains around 6%, and growth over the last two decades has lagged global and emerging-market peers. Research in World Development has repeatedly argued that commodity-rich economies often underperform when fiscal rules are weak and politics is volatile, because windfalls arrive faster than institutions can absorb them.

The resources themselves are undeniable. The “lithium triangle” of Chile, Argentina, and Bolivia concentrates more than 60% of resources and over 45% of global reserves. Chile and Peru together supply close to 40% of global copper production, while Brazil matters for nickel and rare earths. The region is also young—median age 31, compared with China (38) and Europe (48)—a demographic advantage that can power growth if jobs and security keep talent from leaving or slipping into informality.

    EFE/ PR Newswire

    Tailwinds From Lithium to Logistics

What feels new heading into 2026, J.P. Morgan suggests, is the global backdrop. The transition toward digital and more sustainable economies is raising demand for critical minerals, energy, and food security—areas where Latin America is structurally competitive. At the same time, supply chains are being redrawn. Nearshoring is pushing new projects toward Mexico, Central America, and parts of South America, as firms seek shorter routes and lower geopolitical risk.

Capital flows already reflect that shift. J.P. Morgan cites annual foreign direct investment of roughly $280 billion, more than double levels from two decades ago, with Brazil, Mexico, Chile, and Peru as major destinations. The figures draw on Bloomberg Finance L.P. and the World Bank, dated December 5, 2025. The stakes are not only how much arrives, but what it builds: supply chains that generate skills, formal jobs, and tax revenue—rather than extractive enclaves that enrich a few and leave the state brittle.

    When Politics Meets the Macro

The third change is political tone. Elections in Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, and Bolivia have pointed toward more centrist, pragmatic leadership, a response to voters who want stability after years of ideological whiplash. Argentina’s 2023 election brought in a market-friendly government focused on fiscal consolidation and deregulation, a signal—at minimum—that volatility has a cost. J.P. Morgan argues that greater moderation can improve policy predictability and revive interest in regional trade and infrastructure deals.

But the region’s constraints are stubbornly human. Crime and violence cost an estimated 3.44% of regional GDP each year, with Mexico and Colombia among the hardest hit. Trust is thin: only 35% of people report high or moderately high confidence in government. Inequality remains entrenched, with a regional Gini near 0.46, far above the OECD average of 0.32—a gap the Journal of Development Economics and Latin American Research Review have linked to weaker social cohesion and slower long-term growth.

Remittances sustain many households, but they also tether local demand to the United States labor market, exposing economies to shocks they cannot vote on. That is why J.P. Morgan treats 2026 as a hinge year, with consensus regional growth around 2.3%—promising, but not transformative unless governments also deliver safer streets, cleaner procurement, and courts that work on time.

The report notes that many governments are already leaning into security investment, judicial reforms, and anti-corruption measures because long-term capital depends on rule of law, not slogans. The window is open, but the climb will be earned—and for Latin Americans, the real measure of success will be ordinary: fewer extortion payments, steadier electricity, and a future that doesn’t require leaving home.

Bruno Fernandes injury: Man Utd face up to a month without captain

Amorim named Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw as two of the senior players who could step up, although it was Fernandes’ fellow Portugal international Diogo Dalot who took the captain’s armband at Villa Park.

After waiting all season for his chance, it is unfortunate for Mainoo that he is not able to step into Fernandes’ shoes on the pitch, although Amorim says he expects the England international to return first.

With defenders Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire still out and Noussair Mazraoui completing United’s trio of Afcon representatives, Amorim will be without seven senior players against Newcastle – with only Casemiro returning after a one-match ban.

It is likely to mean more minutes for academy pair Jack Fletcher and Shea Lacey, who both made their senior debuts in the second half against Villa.

After repeatedly failing to take opportunities to push into the Champions League places, Amorim must now deliver results with a significantly weakened squad against opponents his side should beat given, after Newcastle, their next opponents are Wolves, Leeds and Burnley, who are all battling relegation.

The former Sporting coach remains bullish about their chances.

“I am confident we can win any game,” he said. “Of course, we have some problems but even without many players in this moment in time I believe in the team and trust in my players. If we are really focused, we can win.”

Following a high-level summit at the Carondelet Palace in Quito on Tuesday, Chilean President-elect José Antonio Kast and Ecuadorean President Daniel Noboa have signaled a unified front on the South American migration crisis. Both leaders discussed Kast’s proposal to establish a “humanitarian corridor” to facilitate the return of undocumented Venezuelan migrants to their home country.

In a post-meeting press conference, Kast detailed his plan to coordinate efforts with Argentina, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Colombia to create a secure transit route for migrants currently residing illegally in the Southern Cone and Andean regions.

“What we have proposed on this tour is to see how a humanitarian corridor can be created for people who are in Chile, Peru, and Ecuador illegally so that they can return to their homeland,” Kast stated.

He also called Nicolás Maduro’s Bolivarian regime to “open its borders so that those who want to return can do so.” While Kast did not explicitly mention Noboa’s response, he noted that both leaders share the “same feeling” regarding the Venezuelan government, which he characterized as a dictatorship under an “illegitimate ruler.”

Beyond migration, Kast and Noboa focused heavily on the rise of transnational organized crime, reviewing mechanisms to share intelligence and resources against regional criminal syndicates. “Security will give us freedom, and freedom will protect our democracies,” Kast remarked.

The Ecuadorean Presidency confirmed that the agenda also touched on fiscal order, inflation reduction, and the design of public policies. During his trip, Kast also met with local port and real estate investors, signaling a focus on private sector growth.

It was Kast’s second international trip since his December 14 election victory, following a meeting with Argentine President Javier Milei in Buenos Aires. The itinerary highlights a clear strategic shift for Chile’s incoming administration. Kast noted that while Gabriel Boric Font remains the sitting president until March 11, 2026, he was “anticipating and advancing the work” to establish ties with ideological allies. Next month, Kast is due in Lima for talks with President José Jerí.

Additionally, Kast urged Colombian President Gustavo Petro to “understand the humanitarian crisis” and intercede with Caracas, acknowledging that Colombia’s cooperation is geographically essential for any land-based corridor.

Questioned about current US military maneuvers in the Caribbean, Kast declined to criticize Washington, stating it was not Chile’s place to comment on another country affected by the “negative effects generated by the dictatorial government of Venezuela.”

No cell phones, computers, or electronic devices will be allowed into Bolsonaro’s room, De Moraes ruled

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre De Moraes on Tuesday authorized former President Jair Bolsonaro to be hospitalized on Wednesday to undergo hernia surgery recommended by private doctors and Federal Police experts.

Bolsonaro is scheduled to leave the detention facilities where he is serving his 27-year prison sentence for masterminding the Jan. 8, 2023, uprising to undergo surgery on Christmas Day at the DF Star Hospital in Brasília.

The retired Army captain will undergo surgery to treat an inguinal hernia and persistent hiccups. The hospitalization is expected to last five to seven days, according to his lawyers.

Bolsonaro is being held in a room at the Federal Police Headquarters in the federal capital. During his hospitalization, he will be monitored by Federal Police agents. De Moraes has ruled that the Federal Police must transport and provide security for Bolsonaro in a “discreet” manner.

In addition, the former president will be under 24-hour surveillance, with two agents stationed at his door, as well as other teams inside and outside the hospital.

The judge also prohibited cell phones, computers, and electronic devices from entering Bolsonaro’s room.

Former First Lady Michelle Bolsonaro was the only companion authorized to remain in the hospital. Other visits may only occur with De Moraes’ authorization. (Source: Agencia Brasil)

Israel killed 411 Palestinians and wounded 1,112 in Gaza during truce

The Government Press Office in the coastal enclave stated in a press release that during that period, the Israeli Armed Forces committed 875 ceasefire violations.

The figure includes 265 shootings, 49 incursions by military vehicles into residential areas, 421 bombings of civilians, and 150 attacks on civilian institutions and buildings, as well as 45 illegal detentions.

Such actions constitute a clear violation of international law and a deliberate undermining of the essence of the truce and the provisions of the attached humanitarian protocol, the statement warned.

The Office accused the neighboring country of evading its obligations under the agreement and humanitarian protocol by preventing the entry of the agreed-upon minimum amounts of aid into Gaza.

In the last 73 days, only 17,819 trucks arrived out of the 43,800 that were supposed to enter, with a daily average of only 244 instead of the 600 planned, it emphasized.

As an example, it cited that only 394 fuel trucks arrived in the Strip out of the 3,650 promised, a situation that has paralyzed hospitals, bakeries, and water and sewage stations.

Regarding the housing sector, it warned of a profound and unprecedented crisis due to the prohibition on the entry of tents, mobile homes, caravans, and shelter materials needed to mitigate the effects of the systematic destruction of buildings in the enclave by the aggression.

Israel is fully responsible for the continued deterioration of the humanitarian situation and the lives lost, it stated.

Five things in EFL: A Boxing Day feast

Football can be a pretty transient business, out of the door at one club one week, in the door at another the next.

Cambridge United boss Neil Harris and his director of football Mark Bonner will need to ensure the door they go through at Priestfield Stadium on Boxing Day (15:00 GMT) is marked ‘visitors’.

Harris spent 20 months in charge at Gillingham, which included relegation from League One, while Bonner’s eight-month stint produced 15 defeats in his 28 games.

Since then Harris has been at Cambridge, who he left for Millwall, before returning to the Abbey Stadium in February where once again he was powerless to prevent relegation – see what I mean about the transience?

His second stint with the U’s came at the same time as former boss Bonner’s appointment as director of football – are you keeping up?

They are just one point outside the play-offs but only four ahead of their opponents.

Gillingham’s recent seasons have been mirror images – impressive starts followed by a downturn in form and failure to even trouble the top seven.

Four managers in under two years tells the story and although Gareth Ainsworth’s arrival in March inspired a 21-game unbeaten run, time off for the boss to recover from heart surgery and more indifferent results means they are once again in danger of flattering to deceive.

BBC Sport will have live text coverage of all the EFL action on Boxing Day.
