  • Scotland: Is in-form Hull City striker Oli McBurnie worth a recall?

Scotland: Is in-form Hull City striker Oli McBurnie worth a recall?

Despite missing two months of action through injury, only four players have scored more Championship goals than McBurnie (nine) this term.

Factor in his three assists and only three players have bettered his combined goals contribution tally of 12.

But what do the striker’s underlying numbers tell us about his season so far?

Eight of McBurnie’s strikes have been non-penalty goals, while his goals-per-90 ratio of 0.87 is the third-best in the division.

He is overperforming his expected goals rating by four, so perhaps some will question whether his current level of output is sustainable, but he still ranks just outside the league’s top 10 for shots on target per 90.

Where McBurnie also shines as a forward in England’s second tier is his playmaking ability, with just four other strikers creating more big chances.

Off the ball, he ranks within the Championship’s top 20 strikers for blocks, clearances, tackles and possession won in the final third on a per-90 basis.

Saturday’s winner against West Brom was an eighth goal in nine games and takes his all-time Championship tally to 53 in 138 matches across spells with Barnsley, Swansea, Sheffield United and Hull.

A season-long spell in La Liga with relegated Las Palmas last term, where he scored five goals and set up six, will have also improved him as a player.

Gaza authorities denounce Israeli blockade and warn of crisis

This new crime is seriously endangering the lives of tens of thousands of sick and wounded people, Alaa Halas, director of the Ministry’s Department of Care and Pharmacy warned.

Some 10,000 surgical operations are threatened with being halted due to the shortage of supplies and medicines needed to perform them, he told the Safa news agency.

Halas stated that the crisis in hospitals has reached unprecedented levels in the coastal enclave.

Several of the health centers that survived the Israeli attack have suspended scheduled and emergency surgeries, including the Kuwait Specialized Hospital, which serves thousands of patients and the wounded, he emphasized.

Even emergency operations will be seriously affected if the shortage continues, he stressed.

The official noted that since the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip went into effect on October 10, Israel has only allowed 30% of the agreed-upon supplies to enter.

This crisis threatens some 200,000 patients, including 700 who receive treatment in intensive care units each month and about 10,000 who need surgery, he explained.

According to the Government Press Office, since the truce began, only 17,819 aid trucks have arrived out of the 43,800 that were supposed to enter, averaging just 244 per day instead of the 600 planned.

As an example, he cited that only 394 fuel trucks have arrived in the Gaza Strip out of the 3,650 promised, a situation that has paralyzed hospitals, bakeries, and water and sewage stations.

  • Tony Pulis column: ‘Why I was always driving home for Christmas’

Tony Pulis column: ‘Why I was always driving home for Christmas’

A lot has changed about the game since my first Christmas as a footballer, 50 years ago.

As a young apprentice at Bristol Rovers in the 1970s, it was a time of giving – to me, if I was lucky!

Each apprentice had the job of looking after the boots of at least three senior professionals throughout the season and these duties could not be taken lightly.

Cleaning dressing rooms and even treading in divots to repair a worn-out pitch was also in my remit, but the match boots were crucial and would have to be in spit spot condition for every game.

Over Christmas and Easter, the two busiest times of the season, you’d be non-stop. We would spend hours cleaning, drying and polishing them.

There was some reward, though. Christmas was one of the two extra pay days we would hope would come our way. The other was at the end of the season, when the players you’d been looking after would show their gratitude with a tip of a few pounds.

I had left home at 16 to join Rovers who, at that time, were in what is now the Championship. At that age, I was allowed back to south Wales after training on Christmas Eve.

If the senior players were in on Christmas Day, the apprentices based in Bristol would be obliged to cover for us. But even at that age it was made pretty clear our jobs entailed working during these holiday periods, and on Boxing Day we were always watching the first team or playing in the Football Combination league.

Turning professional myself took away all of the above duties – although I always took care of my own boots and studs anyway – but Christmas was still a special time.

Every club I was at, we had someone who would organise Christmas days – and nights – out.

I went to all sorts of different venues, with many different themed evenings.

Times were different then and our wages were very close to the majority of workers away from the game, so footballers were much closer to the communities they played in. Mixing with the public just wasn’t an issue and those nights out at local pubs and nightclubs to let your hair down were never alcohol-free.

In fact, many managers at times would encourage nights out together to build team bonding and spirit, and encourage a closeness within the group.

Obviously we know now that drinking to excess is not a good idea, but in the 1970s and 80s the English game and culture accepted it and embraced it.

Just take a look back at how many European Cup finals our teams not only competed in, but won during that era – Liverpool, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa are testament to that.

Drinking was never frowned upon. You even took a drop of whiskey or brandy in your pre-match cup of tea if the weather was really cold. I actually played with some very good drinkers, but compare them to the rugby lads of the day and they were just puppies really!

  • Why football at Christmas is a very British tradition

Why football at Christmas is a very British tradition

Over the years, the popularity of Christmas day football dwindled. As living standards have improved and food, gifts and decorations have become more affordable. “Communal entertainments were clearly on the decline as the festival took greater root in the home,” says Prof Johnes.

“Football shifts just to Boxing day, as Christmas day becomes more family orientated and more importantly public transport becomes more and more limited.”

The last Christmas Day game in England was in 1965, when Blackpool beat Blackburn Rovers 4-2 at Bloomfield Road.

The last Christmas Day game in Scotland was Saturday December 25, 1976. Clydebank and St Mirren drew 2-2 in a top-of-the-table first division clash and Alloa beat Cowdenbeath 2-1 at home in the second division.

Northern Ireland still hosts the Steels of Sons cup final every Christmas Day – although it shifts to Christmas Eve if Christmas is on a Sunday.
